I wish I had taken pictures of the subs that I ordered. However, everyone loved them and they went so fast. I have to say that Gill’s is the best overall sub place in (at least) the southern part of Vermont. The employees were kind & the subs were made to perfection. This is one of the many reasons why Gill’s has been around for so long! Thank you all for the amazing subs! We will all be back very soon!

I hadn't been here in a while so I was a little concerned reading the other reviews that gills had changed. Well their memory must be off because the subs are just as good as they always were and the rolls are the same too.

Very disappointed. They promised not to change anything. The rolls are shrinking and have hardly any flavor. They're crumbly and not good. I was very sad that gills is no longer the best grinder shop in Vermont.

In reading the posts here, I've noticed that the bulk of excellent reviews were posted prior to the change of ownership. I believe that everyone who has been a steady customer for years now appear to be disappointed with the current product. I can include myself in that group. I've been eating their hot Italian grinder for decades and they were always delicious. I have no idea what has changed but it's been for the worse. The last one I ate (truly the last) was extremely bland/tasteless.

Gill's Hot Italian Grinders are as EXCELLENT as ever!
We bought 3 giant hot italian meats grinders yesterday (10/29/24). They are SOOO Good!!! Our family has been getting grinders from Gill's since the 1960's, when our Dad started bringing the basketball team he coached to Gill's after away games. We live an hour and a half from Rutland but still stop by whenever we're anywhere near. We love to bring Gill's grinders home for our family members and friends.
Yesterday's grinders had the same great taste, freshness, and care that we always expect and receive from Gill's. We enthusiastically recommend this understated deli with it's great flavors, kind staff, and giant grinders. Thanks to the new owners who are keeping up the long-lasting tradition of delicious, fresh, well-packed grinders served with a smile.

There’s nothing fancy about this unassuming sub shop. It reminds me of the little sandwich shops I frequented as a kid growing up in New York City and southern Connecticut. There are a few small tables where you can eat in if you’d like, and the staff is friendly and efficient. The food is the star here. The hot meat sandwich with the works is so good I dream about it. Please Gill’s, don’t ever change. Best sandwiches in northern New England.

Had a hot italian a few months ago, and wasn't that happy with it. The oil seemed different, with not much flavor. The roll was dry and crumbling. I had another hot italian tonight and I think it was worse than the last one. Cabbage didn't have much taste, and the hot ham had lots of hard fat in it. I've been going there since the 60s, but I'm not sure about going back. Whatever you changed, please change it back.

I picked up a takeout order this evening I had called in on the way home from work. For some reason a cold grinder was wrapped in foil, not wax paper. There was mayo smeared all over the foil, the cabbage I had substituted for lettuce was wrapped into every fold of the foil and spilled everywhere, there are three slices of tomatoes, probably two pounds of lettuce and six pieces of bacon on my BLT. Most of the mayo was on the foil, no oil or salt and pepper like I asked for. This used to be the best deli around but the new owners are running this place into the ground. I'll choose Subway over Gills next time.

I agree with other reviews , grinders are good, but not authentic Gill’s. Been coming here since their grand opening in 1964, and most every year since at least once , with family in Rutland and Lakehouse in Sudbury VT. If I’m not mistaken , hot Capicola was in the Italian grinder along with Genoa and I believe mortadella and picante provolone cheese . I could be wrong on the mortadella . But it reminded me of Jersey Mike’s as well , not the Gill’s of Rutland . Things change , the nostalgia will wane and others of my generation will note the change. Based on that will the new generations really wait in a long line for a quasi Jersey Mike’s grinder ( or do they say subs)
