We’ve now tried Southside Steakhouse three times, hoping each visit would be the one that changed our minds—but unfortunately, third time was not the charm.
To start with the positives: the drinks are consistently good, and the staff is genuinely friendly and attentive. Service has never been the issue here.
The food, however, continues to be lackluster. We started with the French onion soup, prime rib egg rolls, and the mozzarella fritti. The French onion soup was decent—probably the highlight of the appetizers. The prime rib egg roll is only enjoyable because of the sauce it’s served with; on its own, it falls flat. If you’re looking for a truly good prime rib egg roll, Mad Rose on Center Street does it far better (and the atmosphere there is leagues ahead, too). The fried mozzarella was fine flavor-wise, but both it and the egg rolls were oddly served on tiny beds of shredded cabbage—which stuck to the food and added nothing to the dish.
Speaking of atmosphere, that’s another major downside. The dining room feels more like a hotel conference room than a steakhouse. With everyone seated around the perimeter with their backs to the wall, the layout feels cold and uncomfortable rather than inviting.
We originally planned on ordering the wagyu ribeye, but after the underwhelming appetizers, we changed course. I had the citrus beet salad, which wasn’t bad, and my boyfriend ordered the wagyu burger medium rare. When it arrived, we cut it in half and found that only the very center had the slightest hint of pink. For a burger ordered medium rare—especially at this price point—that’s disappointing. If you want a truly good wagyu burger, take the drive to Mach’s in Pawlet instead.
We finished with the crème brûlée, which was good, but not memorable or worth going out of your way for.
Overall, Southside Steakhouse feels overhyped for what it delivers. With so many excellent restaurants in and around Rutland, this just isn’t where we’d recommend spending your money.

The prime rib was really good and so was the shrimp. The atmosphere is inviting relaxed but could be fancy if you needed it to be. This would be a good business dinner go to place.
Go...you will enjoy yourself. The wait staff is helpful and friendly too.

If I could leave no stars I would. We waited 20 minutes after the hostess seated us NO ONE ever came to take our order, get us water, or drinks. We finally got up and left. We also had a party of 5 and they seated us in a four person booth. Save your money go somewhere that has better customer service.
Good experience, delicious food and pleasant atmosphere

We happened upon this restaurant late (an hour before closing) and, luckily, were able to be seated. For appetizers we ordered two house caesar salads, the generous dressing and shaved parmesan cheese were delicious. Since it was late, we decided on the Vermont Wagyu burgers rather than steak. They were ordered medium rare--they were cooked perfectly! We finished with carrot cake and the steakhouse eclair (huge--two-person dessert!). Next time we are in town, we will definitely eat here again.

Heart and soul in the food they put on the table.
The only restaurant who can make mashed potatoes a star on your dinner plate.
A late arrival, approaching closing time, the service was *still* great.

Stopped in for dinner during our last night in Vermont and glad we did. We had the Poutine appetizer, the Prime Rib and the Pork chop. Everything was delicious but that pork chop was memorable!! All good cooked to perfection. Beautiful restaurant, amazing drink menu and beer selection. Staff member Jenny was a legend and just a super person who made us feel right at home. God bless you Jen.

Wait staff was awesome. Food was awesome.
I had Poutine as appetizer. Best I have had since Canada.
I had a hanger steak with mashed potatoes. The flavors were so good I did not use any condiments whatsoever.

The NY sirloin steak was nice and pink in the middle with a crispy seared exterior.
The scallops were lathered in a delicious, light maple glaze. The red potatoes were so good. They were seasoned just right.

Third time in a row it was terrible. No flavor to the steak or mashed potatoes. Told server. She was great. She mentioned a boss, Allison, that didn’t even bother to come talk to us. We were two people spending $200. This is not consistent with the owner of this establishment whom I’ve had many great conversations with. I think he’s just chosen poor people to run this restaurant. Very unfortunate. After three tries, we just can’t go back. I miss his places in Ludlow.

My wife and I had a birthday dinner that was superb. This by far the best restaurant around. Pricy, but really nice.

The prime rib was excellent. While the wine has a slightly higher mark-up than normal, the selection was very good.Christian is an excellent waiter and wine server. This is a great place.
