Even before we lived in Bellingham, we'd drive up to eat at the Colophon (and visit Village Books). It's been a favorite lunch or dinner spot of ours since the 90s.
The soups are excellent (especially the peanut soup) as are the sandwiches and salads. They do have gluten free bread available. Service is always really attentive. And, we really appreciate the changing selection of cocktails (favorites are the Winter Margarita, the Bee's Knees, and the Old Fashioned.)
I ordered the Shakshuka. The taste was fine but it came with only one egg. I asked the waitress for a second egg and explained to her that one egg is not enough for the dish. If you’ve ever had Shakshuka, it’s an egg dish and without enough eggs you’re left with just tomato sauce.
I got charged for the extra egg, was not going to argue with their policy but they should make adequate amount of food for what they’re charging.
Pretty good overall experience. Just a slight downfall was that the waiter could have come around a little more often to ask if anything was needed vs us having to look around to flag him down still recommend the place
Watch their hours of business- closed on Tuesdays!
I was pretty disappointed during my recent visit. I haven’t been to the Colophon in quite some time and my experience this time was not up to the quality I’ve always experienced before. The food was not good, I was laughed at for being surprised that they didn’t carry non-fat milk, and the wait person was snippy and condescending. I was really caught off guard by this. I will not be going back which is unfortunate. Fairhaven is changing as things do but I’m finding it losing much of its community connections.
It's changed. To me, no longer for locals more for the tourists. I get it, that's business. Raised prices, no longer any simple quiche or sandwiches, all almost $20. Out of turkey?? I'm saddened and upset about it 😔 Personal opinion 😊
2.5 Stars. ($33 For A Mid Size French Dip, A Few Potato Wedges, And A Sauce Cup Size Cup Of Soup) Good Taste, Indubitably Slow Service.
Love this place, everytime I visit Fair Haven this the first place I eat. Had African peanut soup with cheese wedges and salad with boundary bay scotch ale.

Colophon Cafe is a drag. The food is far too expensive. $20 HAMBURGER. Not just a $20 hamburger, but a $20 DRY MEAT, GREEN TOMATO, WILTED LETTUCE..., THING¡! The worst part besides the flat soda was the confused pickle which was far too sweet to be a dill. The atmosphere is boring. Service is nonexistent.

Delicious!!! Atmosphere is great, we enjoyed our brunch outside and service was very good. We tried the avocado toast and smoked salmon bagel...both were great. Will definitely come back.

The Empty Bowls benefit was a huge success, thanks to the wonderful restaurants and bakeries who donated soup and bread. African Peanut soup and the Split Pea soup were crowd pleasers! Everyone enjoyed live music, picking out a local artist hand-made/thrown bowl, and eating delicious soup and bread. Thank you Colophon for supporting the essential work of @bellinghamfoodbank and @opportunity_council project Maple Alley Inn to fight hunger in our community.
