I've eaten at some of the best Japanese and Asian restaurants in New York City, so my bar is very high. Bottom line is this. For the big top prices Japonica charges, I expected greater things. I found the menu surprisingly limited and the food quality mediocre. My partner felt the same way. I will never again be paying their reservation deposit (which I find utterly unnecessary). For the record, the service that particular night was very good, and the decor was lovely. Perhaps it will improve as time goes on. And I agree with another review here that pointed out the cold food choices dominating.

A bit of a tease to south Whidbey islanders to say you’re opening a Japanese restaurant and then have limited raw items and few Japanese dishes on the menu. We left very underwhelmed and the price was jarring. The space is gorgeous but the menu leaves a lot to be desired. I really want this place to succeed, but the menu needs an overhaul.

Japonica is a great addition to S Whidbey. Wonderful food, friendly staff, easy location, indoor and outdoor seating and on certain nights live music near the restaurant which can be heard from outdoor seating area. Looking forward to becoming regulars during our trips to the island.

Japonica is DELISH!! Highly recommend the Twangy poke bowl. what an upgrade from the cult following of momma fish into a full fledged full menu place. oh - and YES Boboa too!!! 🙌

We came in on Friday with our 4 year old and sat outside. The food was excellent, the staff was incredibly charming, supportive and knowledgeable. Kid loved the rainbow cake. It was a great dining experience, will come back

The hamachi sashimi bowl I ordered for takeout today was the perfect way to nourish myself on a hot summer day. Not wanting to cook in the heat, I picked up the order quickly from friendly staff. However, I couldn't resist taking a quick look at the pretty bar and attractive dining room -there was also nice outdoor seating. Simple elegance. My dinner was a combination of perfectly fresh tender yellowtail sashimi, seaweed salad with a light sesame dressing, crunchy cucumber, ginger, and spicy micro greens over sushi rice. Everything tasted like Japan, where I lived for 4 years. Such a treat to have this gem just a few miles from my house on the island. I loved it and will be back.

I have to be fully honest before I start. We only had sushi and not bowls, but the fish was very fresh and when you order sushi with crab, you get real crab meat. All of the seafood used was very fresh and the rice used for the sushi was one I have never had before. It tasted like a cross beween sushi rice and brown rice. It was very enjoyable. The restaurant is very light and airy and you can even sit on the deck. Would I go again, yes and everyone should try.
