I discovered High Tide Seafoods' Dungeness Whole Cooked Crab at one of our local markets called Island Grocery Depot. The individually-packed frozen crabs were selling for a competitive price with average size being two pounds. I've learned a lesson from purchasing thawed Dungeness crabs from Costco that a lot of them have that ammoniated smell after cooking which is the result of the crab pretty much being expired long past its end date, and the reason why I'll buy only live or frozen crustaceans. Who knew I'd encounter another flaw?
DUNGENESS CRAB:
I bought two crabs. The first one I steamed while frozen for about 15 minutes. While the legs were warm, the inside of the crab where the majority of the meat is was still cold. But, all the meat was super dry, which I thought was the result of my over-steaming. So, for crab number two, I thawed it out by leaving it in the sink for a few hours, then shelled it to use in a baked dish I was making. Turns out it's the pre-cooking (at the factory?) that severely dried out the crab, not my over-steaming, as the meat was extremely parched still. Dry crab meat is not only horrible in texture, it also loses a lot of its natural flavors.
OVERALL:
Just a hint of ammoniated smell. The dehydrated meat was very disappointing and such a waste of money. Lesson learned.
We wanted to enjoy dungeness crab while we were in the area but couldn't find a good seafood restaurant that had crab on the menu. So, we decided to steam our own crab instead. High Tide Seafoods has live crab. They even offered to clean it for me, which was nice because I would not have been able to fit a whole crab into the medium size steam basket at our AirBNB cabin. The crabs were delicious! The service was excellent.
Love the people that wirk there and miss Audra working there she loves that place never stops talking about how wonderful the people are and how she misses it on top great prices for everything
Great place to get your sea food
The salmon was excellent! We went back twice! Purchased a few pounds to freeze for later meals on our vacation.
Fresh off the boat!
Since High Tide Seafood was bought by Olympic Peninsula Seafood Shawn, my husband and best friend, has worked hard at tearing down the old physical infrastructure and building up the new fresher look. Everything has been updated making the overall feel of the place friendlier, safer, and reliably fresh and delicious ...
High Tides is no longer it was sold and the new owners are making changes the company name is now OLYMPIC PENINULA SEAFOODS
SO please disregard any negative comments that have been made or told because this seafood company is great to work for and the seafood is fresh and at a reasonable price.
Greatness
Unbelievably loud seven days a week. Not great neighbors.
I worked there one night for 6.5 hours and quit. They never sent me a check as I requested and when I came back a few months later to get my money they were only willing to pay me for 5 hours of work at below minimum wage. They also treated me rudely and said that it was my fault for not coming in sooner. Nobody with integrity should work here or do business with these petty people.
