We stopped in and wanted to get some lunch special for our family. The lady at the counter WV location wasn’t very friendly. It was like we were bothering her because we wanted to place an order. We should’ve left at that point but I wanted the tamales. The tamales were so mushy I wish I could post my picture. Horrible horrible. I don’t understand all the rave reviews these were inedible! Don’t waste your money

My wife and I went here on a recommendation from a buddy while in Spokane. We came back to Olympia through Yakima just to try this place out!
It did not disappoint. I had two tamales with rice and beans. Hands down the absolute best pork tamale I’ve ever had. The pork was moist and delicious and the corn tamale wrap was moist, thin and tasted perfectly of corn. The rice and beans were nice as well. My wife started with one pork tamale and went back for a second (which is unheard of!) she raved about them.
It’s a very Spartan place, the ambience is non existent but you’re there for the flipping food not the decor!
The staff were friendly and helpful.
We will go back for sure, I’m really looking forward to the asparagus tamales which are seasonal in the spring/summer.
Try it out!

Vegetarian options: I’m not vegetarian but the daily special was a jalapeño/cheese tamale which I tried. It was good but a little dry.

Almost as good as my grandmothers and that's a huge deal. Really good Tamales.

No frills place, it's all about the tamales, as if you're eating lunch at your grandma's house. Taste very homemade. They may not have frozen tamales for purchase to go, but call ahead 24 hrs and they'll be ready

I have always really liked this place and recommended it. However what I can’t do is a luke warm tamal and at 3:30p, hours before they close being told they stop cooking at a certain time and everything after is wrapped up and held in a box. So half way through the day you can’t get hot fresh food? How do you get a James Beard award for that? Boo.

As a winner of the James Beard “America’s Classics” award, a restaurant has to be family-owned, operating for over a decade, and serve “quality food that reflects the character of its community.” Los Hernandez seems to check all of those boxes. The interior was cute and homey, and tamales were delicious. I got the lunch combo with asparagus and pepperjack tamales and felt that the texture of the asparagus was an excellent replacement for meat. The masa had great moisture and texture too. It was a bit expensive and I felt like the salsa quantity provided was too little, but otherwise a great experience.

Parking: There is a free parking lot right outside the restaurant

No hype here! Tamales are amazing like you think. Felipe the owner/original chef was there sharing his story. Inspiring and tasty. The pork and chicken tamales were equally amazing. Also the hats are sick.
