I feel deflated.
I finally tried the Whistlestop because everyone I knew raved about how fantastic the BBQ was. After all, in their name, Wilson's Whistle Stop/FRESH BBQ, why would I question the recommendations?
Hours were hard to find online, no menu, no nothing. Their Facebook page hasn't been updated since 2020. So we called and found out they are open from 11-3 Thurs, Fri & Sat.
We pulled in, and it smelled fantastic! (Excitement is building), walk in, it seems as though they remodeled, put in a bar etc.. Love the aesthetic, garage doors that open to let the air pass through, super clean and a nice outside area.
They placed the sheet of paper in front of me that listed their menu.

Where was the BBQ? We were hoping for a separate menu with all of the deliciousness: Brisket, Ribs, Burnt Ends, Rib Tips, BBQ Chicken etc. We asked if they had ribs or anything else because everyone told me that the ribs were the best they have ever had. This is where my excitement started to wane.
"No." was the answer. Well, that seems odd, the bartender mentioned that they were trying to get rid of some rib tips and she would put some on the side for us to try, but they weren't for sale. Um, OK. I ordered the pulled pork ($8.99) and an ala carte side of Potato Salad ($2.00 and please note the size of that portion in my photo). My friend ordered the pork chop sandwich ($9.99) with ala carte baked beans ($3.00). The food came out rather quickly, like 3 minutes, which definitely meant that his porkchop was not freshly grilled. Everything was fine. But that's it. Just fine. I mean you can't really mess up pulled pork, and the same goes for a butterfly pork chop. And we did not receive any rib tips as a sample.
Maybe this establishment was great in the past, but it really is just mediocre at best current day.
I absolutely LOVE Wilson Meats and they are definitely my go to butcher for everything. Which is probably why I am taking the time to write this review because I am just so darn disappointed.
The two staffers behind the bar were very pleasant and likely the highlight of our stop.

Went once and food was great.Second time we called to order takeout and someone asked “can you hold one minute?”5 minutes later and nobody picked up the phone. Called every 5 minutes after that and phone still seemed off hook. After almost 30 minutes gave up. Like the food but hate the “place a takeout” service. Hire someone to answer the phone on fridays and you won’t lose business. How many other takeout orders did you miss during that 30 minutes?

Food and service was great. We ordered takeout to a nearby hotel. Chili wasn't what I expected but still okay. Would like to try eating in next time I'm in the area, the open resturant area seemed nice.

Great place ! I usually pick up steaks from the Wilson's meat market, the best I might add and very reasonably priced ! The restaurant is just as good ? great manager and waitress. Definitely will be back !!

My neighbor spoke this place up and said that they had some good ribs they were close enough to me that I can go and knock on their door I mean visit the restaurant and check it out for myself and I did just the in Elkhorn Wisconsin nice layout, open, inviting, had a singer, so all pluses + right outdoor seating. The ribs was Amateur at best they still had the membrane on the back, burnt, over seasoned and no smoke rings no smoke flavoring the biggest crime -DRY and tough

The worst brisket Ive ever had. Was tough as rubber and dry. It also had no smoke ring so i think it was just baked. Nothing here is fresh, just cooked and reheated for days clearly. The pulled pork was also just reheated but better than the brisket. The kitchen when I went today was 1 adult and 3 teens running it. The dead giveaway was their smoker outside wasn't even on so you know it was probably up to week old meat. Last year it was real, this year the meat is just disgusting. Again 3 teens running a bbq joint says it all. Im reaching out for a refund especially considering the 24.99$ a pound price tag for stale dry brisket. Ask for a sample before you carry out, I wish I did....
Very delicious pork chop sandwich and nice service in a pleasant space. Local beers on tap & features local meats from Wilson's Meat store.
Great food and service. Wonderful restaurant. If you're from the area and haven't been there you should go. If you're from out of town is worth the meal
I ordered the chicago style hot dog with chips and was very happy. I really liked the atmosphere and the live music they had. It was a good dining experience. I'm giving 4 stars because the other person in my group got the sirloin burger. The flavor was good but the burger patty size was pretty small. And it was $14. We just thought that was too pricey for what you got there. I wish also they had combo specials (fries + drink). But we will try them again.
What a sweet spot! The food was so awesome - best cheese curds and queso we have ever had. The meat was phenomenal and the staff brought us the new ribeye sandwich to sample. Can’t wait to come back.
