There are several dining establishments in this semi-rural county that I like but this one has a warmth and ambience that can’t be beat anywhere in Southern Wisconsin. The food is not fancy but always good. Today I stopped by for a solo lunch — spicy black bean burger with blue cheese, veggies and chips. There’s always at least one cold brew on tap that rounds out my food experience. Long tables accommodate groups or facilitate making new friends. Most of the time though I’m drawn in the evening for dinner and music. The back room has been known statewide and beyond for decades, as a (somewhat bohemian) destination for audiences and performers. The genre is often folk or singer-songwriter but ranges beyond. We’ll-known artists sometimes have the Carpe on their calendar. Owner/chef/performer Bill Camplin delivers witty introductions for the acts when not performing himself. Wow, this place has not lost its charm, excellent service, or the great food over the last 20yrs. If you like laid back fun and simple but high quality fare, put this amazing little gem on your must visit list. Oh, and they have a wonderful live music venue as well.

Delicious food and drinks! Got Cajun Tuna and Cajun Meatloaf for dinner, as well as Black beans soup. Everything was absolutely delicious, so we decided to stay for Irish coffee with some desserts! They were delicious, definitely recommend the turtle bars and carrot cake.And staff is especially amazing!

An evening at the Cafe Carpe (tavern/music venue) is like going home - that is if your parents are culinary masters of American fare. Serving savory homemade sandwiches, salads and specialties along with rich pies and tortes that could only have been created with loving care using only the finest of fresh ingredients. Great drive from Milwaukee. Prices are great for the show s and top musicians . Food is real good, I had a grass fed hamburger and fries . Everyone was friendly even Bill, who's one of the best singers I've ever heard . I enjoyed it a lot . Hope he books the R+ B Cadets someday .
