For many years Von Trier has been the quintessential German bar in Milwaukee's east side. I used to live so close to it and now that I'm no longer in Wisconsin I miss it. Von Trier is, I should say, more German than many of the German bars I've visited while traveling in Germany. Tradition is important, and you can see that from wall to wall, ceiling to ceiling, you can see that in the decoration and the style. Von Trier has an impressive and large selection of beer, and I think for any fan of German beer, or just good beer in general, you'll definitely find something to stimulate your palate and placate your thirst. I visit Wisconsin once a year and I always come back here. Good memories and good beer. As it should be.

Sixth time wasn’t a charm for me.Over the last year or so, I have stopped in at Von Trier for a casual drink or food with my girlfriend and enjoyed our time. I personally am partial to the Früh Kölsch as I visited their taproom when in Köln, but the wursts are also good.Last Saturday my girlfriend and I stopped in for an old-fashioned and half liter of Hofbräu. I enjoyed the experience and asked a group of friends, aged 23 to 25, to join me for a midday drink to catch up this weekend.Upon entering we were carded, which I interestingly never had been in my previous 4 times there, but that’s fine. Then, my 25 year old friend was buying his 25 year old girlfriend a drink and presented both of their I.D.’s upon his request as she was seated at the table next to the bar. He then asked her to stand up to match her to the I.D., which is also understandable. She was about 8 feet from him and then he made her walk right up to the bar to verify because “when you present an I.D. You generally have to be that close” And then he said “and we like to follow the rules here” and gave some of the other people in the group a hard time, including another of the 25 year olds with us who recently cracked the corner of his I.D. (And wasn’t served). After praising the place to my friends, the server was super rude to the group. We quickly and respectfully finished our drinks and left because we were very aware that he didn’t want us there. As we left, a group of people celebrating a birthday wearing gold entered, so I hope the bartender didn’t also ruin their experience. The “we like to follow the rules” comment, after being rude, was particular interesting because I was the second youngest of the group and had never once been carded there prior - seemingly not “following” the rules. It would be one thing if we were drunk and yelling, but it was the early afternoon and our first stop after lunch. Again, I was eager to show all my friends a pub I had liked, but instead they all were scared off of the place and I felt bad that I hyped up a place that treated the group poorly.Decent place for a meal and a good beer, but don’t try to expand their clientele and bring your friends.

One of the best bars in Milwaukee. Great German beer selection, warming interior, and a friendly crowd.

Awesome atmosphere for a good German beer hall. The decor and paintings are great! They have a good selection of German beer and lots of cocktails. The food menu is traditional. We really enjoyed the hot pretzel, but it wasn't as "giant" as we were hoping. The prices aren't cheap but also not super expensive. There is a front room, back room, and an outdoor beer garden. With that, sometimes the service can be a little slow with people spread out. Overall, definitely would recommend coming here for some half liters and good German atmosphere. I wish they would play some more traditional music!

German bar with amazing atmosphere and walls full of tshatshkies. It's worth it to go just to see the decorated beerstein collection they have all over the place.Great selection of German and local beers, Spaten by the litre being my favorite currently. Prices are a little high, 13$ a litre, cocktails about the same, but as an occasional treat, ok sure.Bathrooms are subpar, small and dirty. They do have another restroom in the back, in the private room. Much nicer, but I'm not sure that it's always available.Parking: Busy area, hard to find street parking at night. There is a garage nearby, but I'm unsure of the price.Wheelchair accessibility: Multilevel place, with narrow aisles, do not recommend for wheelchairs

I hadn’t been here since they started serving food, so when family was visiting and wanted to go out for German, we decided to try it. The atmosphere is just as I remembered - it actually feels like you’ve stepped into an old world beer hall in Germany, with painted murals and steins lining the walls. We got there during Happy Hour, when some drinks are $6, a great value. There was just one hardworking server, and several guys behind the bar, but when we asked one about drinks he suggested we just wait for the server to come to our table. Seemed like they could have helped her out.Everybody loved the food they ordered, sausages with delicious condiments like radish slaw and caramelized onions, spaetzle and sauerkraut, and fish fry with potato pancakes. Truly some of the best German food in a very German city.Dietary restrictions: I didn’t notice any specifically gf items on the menu, but I requested a sausage without the bun, and found it to be a very satisfying meal. The server did inquire if I had Celiac or a sensitivity, showing they have an awareness of how to handle food allergies.

Good food. Nice service. No veggie meats; the menu on their site says they have Impossible Burgers & Sausage, but they don't.It seemed like they were out of a lot of things.

I didn't have a full meal but we did have some great beers, managing to land during the happy hour to get a discount on the first round.Service was good. Our waitress got a little distracted by the group at the patio but was other was otherwise friendly and helpful. Great stuff.Beers? Cold and delicious. A lager for first round and second, the Weihenstephean hefeweizen that was perfect, served with a slice of lemon.Cheese curds? AMAZING. Super hot, fresh, flavorful and exactly what I expect in Wisconsin. And we also split the pretzel, it was tasty stuff. I preferred the mustard over the cheese sauce. Good stuff!Parking: Busy neighborhood on a week night but I did find a spot for the Sprinter van.

Poutine and daily specials combined with great decor and a downtown vibe. Food was amazing, beer was on point, appreciate the decor though the place needs a thorough dusting and cleaning (can see dust webs eveywhere)

Missed Milwaukee's Octoberfest but since we were determined to get German food, we stopped by this establishment due to the high ratings and reviews - glad we did for our first time! We dined in the later evening, the place dimmed, the interesting decor and stained glass windows glistening, the tv screens playing movies, the crowd small and subtle during our visit.Although they ran out of the braised short rib that night, the food we ordered (pictured) was great. The pretzel with cheese and mustard was larger than life and delicious, so definitely recommend ordering that. The chicken schnitzel plate: chicken was crispy yet tender (not dry), loved the gravy over the chicken and spatzel - would have loved more spatzel and gravy, but I surprisingly really liked the warm sauerkraut and red cabbage! The star of the show was the smoked Hungarian - bold meaty flavor and the bourbon barbecue sauce took it to the next level. Fries were good, too. Husband also ordered two glasses of beer to drink along with food.Service was fine, as it seemed to be only one female server tending to the small crowd at the time. She was nice, quick, and attentive.Overall, we were very satisfied and will visit again when in the area. Thank you, Von Trier!Parking: We did have to find parking and walk a little bit to the restaurant. At the time of our Sunday evening dinner, paid parking was not applicable for the space we parked at, so it was free parking.Kid-friendliness: Menu appeals to kids, as there was a family with two kids during our visit.
