Free chips and salsa. Great menu variety, including combo meals (ex: burrito/ taco with beans and rice). Excellent wait staff and food arrived super fast...we were both thinking it couldn't be our food, we just ordered!

If I could give more than 5 stars I would!! It's become one of our favorite restaurants, and I cannot believe we didn't know about it before!! The food is incredible and it's one of the rare places that you can tell the food is homemade with fresh very qualitative ingredients. We love cooking and the nachos we had (nachos locos) would beat what we would have cooked at home. The queso was incredible, steak and chicken also, and all the other toppings everything fresh and delicious.Also the portion was huge, and that is just appetizer.

Everything we ate was very tasty, truly Mexican flavors. The atmosphere is lovely, specially in the patio in summer time. Everyone is very kind, Gabriel was our server and he was great. New favorite Mexican restaurant.

Great food at low prices. We came at happy hour (3 to 5:30 pm) and got sat right away. Our waiter, Julio, checked on us multiple times and refilled our drinks at least three times. We were celebrating a birthday and Julio offered a shot, desert, and/or the staff to sing to us. We ordered the steak fajitas and the burrito fajitas, it fed four hungry adults. Live Mariachi band too.

My wife and I went to the El Charro in Waunakee off of Arboretum Drive near 113.
We went there on a Sunday after church. It was a really nice day so we decided to eat out on their patio.
It wasn't crowded so we were seated immediately. A waiter came very quickly to take our drink orders. The drinks were brought out quickly and he then took our food orders.
The chips were warm and the salsa was mild but with a good overall flavor.
I had an enchilada combo which came with rice and beans.
After a reasonable amount of time our food arrived.
My enchiladas were very good. They provided enough sauce and the cheese was prominent without drowning the entire dish. And, even though my combo of chicken and cheese was a custom order, it was correct. Not all restaurants get that right.
The waiter was attentive without being intrusive and brought drink and chip refills without having to be asked. Another detail many restaurants don't get right.
Overall we really enjoyed our meal and the service. I recommend this restaurant if you're looking for good standard Americanized Mexican food. I know that sounds snooty, but I don't mean it that way, I swear.

Decent place for a group outing. The space is furnished well and the service was on point. Very busy for a random week night.
The food was just okay. The menu is a little bit Americanized rather than traditional. The birria was a mess to eat the way it was presented.
What did surprise me, was that when asking for spicy salsa, they actually gave me a gut buster made with a bunch of habanero. Hottest salsa I've had in all of the Madison area. Bonus points for that. 👍

Really tasty tomatillo and queso blanco sauces on their enchiladas! Salsa is a good level of spice. Great service, too!
Update June 2025 - this place is still great. The Burrito Bandera is my favorite. The patio is lovely, too!

Julio and the people were great...very good food and the amount was unreal..great value..he was excellent and our order was perfect. We have allergies etc so it was not easy but they made it easy..highly recommend
