I went there with a date, for lunch. The only thing I didn't care for was the wair to be seated. We stood there for 14 minutes waiting for someone. The woman who came in behind us walked immediately to the cashier and began speaking with her. She grabbed a menu and proceeded to walk around us and when a server finally came, she was at first. They didn't have a sign up, stating they were looking for help, but we weren't even acknowledged by anyone.

I ate here recently for the first time. The outside of the restaurant is far from appealing to me, but the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” applies here. I had a pork chop with fried potatoes, pinto, and cornbread. Absolutely delicious my partner had a roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and fries. Very, very good. For dessert we had some type of coconut pie, which I’m not a fan of pie, but this was very good. We also split one of their huge chocolate chip homemade cookies that is to die for.
There’s nothing like homemade fried potatoes, cornbread, and pinto beans. It’s hard to find that anywhere in Charleston aside from your own kitchen.
If this place underwent a makeover, it would likely attract people from diverse backgrounds & generations.
Did I mention my order was HOT & CORRECT?? And the portion sizes are HUGE. 2 people can share 1 dinner.
Will be eating here again soon
I’ve eaten here for many many years and have never had a bad meal. The staff are so friendly. Great home cookin’—highly recommend the cabbage rolls, graham cracker pie, and sage dressing! Oh and the dinner rolls—chefs kiss!
Wow! I've lived here for almost 4 years and love to resturant around with the wife. This is that hidden gem and local old time place that all the locals go to for their homemade, delicious food. My Gosh! It's the best for comfort food made fresh and made right. Taste on everything was sooooo good! The wife tried the baked steak with creamy, homemade mashed potatoes and pinto beans that are made correctly with the right flavorings. I wanted the double stuffed cabbages, but they were down to only one, so I had the baked chicken over dressing (stuffing). The owner came out and gave us the last stuffed cabbage to eat as an appetizer and apologized. Oh my gosh!! It was soooooo good. Did I mention the fresh made soft, sweet, doughy dinners rolls and butter? I can't wait to go back and try the meal. Both our meals were just like grandma would make and couldn't have been better. During the meal, we were gifted with a deep-fried dressing patty to try. Sounds kinda funky, but it was so succulent! Again, it tasted like grandma's old-time recipe. We noticed the plate of spaghetti that the next table was eating. It was gigantic, and they ended up bringing some home. The wife wanted to try a homemade dessert but was too full. I ended up bringing home some of my dinner. It was just as good the next day. Prices were good for what you get here.....not too expensive, and not cheap.
BTW: we waited only minutes to be seated when we got here.
You can see that I've done well over 500 reviews and posted 4000 pictures and short videos. I have over 22,000,000 views, and I'm one of the very top restaurant reviewers for Google maps/Mapquest. This restaurant just became our favorite local American comfort food place to go. I'm sure this will be a regular go-to restaurant for us. I apologize for being verbose with this review, but this restaurant has been around for 65 years in the Diehl family, and you've got to try it!! I'm sure that you'll agree on how good it is.
BTW: if you're traveling on Rt 64, exit off the Nitro exit 45 or Exit 50 for Institute. Punch it into your GPS. Its easy to find. And, it's worth the mile or two to enjoy a meal here. I'll bet dollars to donuts that you'll make it a regular stop on your travels.

Visiting from out of town with family. They chose this restaurant and we found it to be generally disappointing. We all wanted the chicken livers and they were out of stock at 6 pm on a Saturday evening; the party sitting behind us found similar disappointment. Perhaps the kitchen staff can do a better job in stocking advertised menu items in the future? I personally then settled on the spaghetti with meat sauce which I found to be very bland. The best item I had was the ice tea which was very good.
This place is great. Old fashioned, home style cooking. Very large servings. Salad big and fresh. German style steak was wonderful, veal parmesan. Garlic and corn breads. Service was fast and friendly.
Roast beef and mashed potatoes are very good I got it from a take out order today. Coconut pie awesome rolls great. Worth two hour trip from Motown area.
My friend and I each had the fish sandwich. She got onion rings with hers and I had chips. I did try her onion rings. They were delicious. We both really liked the fish sandwiches. The server was attentive and didn't rush us out. We typically take 1.5 to 2 hours when we go out for lunch. We were there for 2 hours. I believe his name was Leslie. He was great. The lady who checked us out was sweet. The decor was really cool and the menu was huge. Will definitely be back. Nice little mom and pop diner. I would have taken more pictures but I didn't want to capture other customers.
Just moved to the area from RI and we are so happy to have found this place! The food is delicious and wait staff very friendly. Definitely will be returning on a regular basis.
