I stayed in Spencer for a bit, and boy. If you haven't had the coffee at Backwood Ramblings, you're missing out. The coffee is excellent. No bitterness at all, just smooth texture and delicious flavor. Their specialty lattes are my jam. I tried a different one every time I came by, and they were all amazing. (By way of comparison, I got an equivalent latte in Pittsburgh and tossed the entire thing after one drink. Bitter, nasty. Backwood Ramblings put them to shame.) Anytime I'm down this way, you can bet I'll be swinging by Spencer for a cup of coffee at Backwood Ramblings. Gold.

Sad to write a poor review but I feel obligated at this point. I’ll start with the positives… I’m staying in Spencer, WV for the winter and was excited to try this little cafe. The ambiance is effortlessly chic, relaxed, very clean and calm.
My first visit I ordered a drop coffee with cream and sugar and a hot cocoa. Both were extremely watery and flavorless and took a long time to be prepared. My husband ended up dumping his coffee down the sink and I only choked down the hot cocoa because I felt so guilty wasting over $10 just to toss it all. This morning I decided to give them another try by ordering a bagel with cheese and sausage, NO EGG! Again, the wait took FOREVER, the bagel sandwich was over $10.00 and came out COVERED in egg, which I am allergic to. I went right back to the counter to rerun the item and ask for just a plain bagel to tide me over on my way to work. But they were suddenly out of bagels entirely. I left hungry, out my money and with a reminder that just because a cafe looks pretty doesn’t necessarily mean the fare is any good.

Had a lovely breakfast at Backwood Ramblings, loved that they opened early at 7 and saved us a fast food stop. Wonderfully comfortable and clean, the staff was most attentive and friendly. Best latte in town! They also have a very nice collection of Amish goods and Reading Sodas. I will definitely be returning for their lunch menu! We ordered the western breakfast sandwich- perfectly spicy and hearty. Thank you Backwood Ramblings for such a great start to our day!
