Une perle française au cœur de Calgary | A French Gem on 17th Ave

The Black Sheep Pâtisserie is not just a bakery, it is a tribute to French excellence in pastry and café culture. Today, I had the joy of trying for the first time their Paris-Brest Pistache (yes, pronounced more elegantly en français!), a delicate choux pastry ring filled with a silky pistachio praline cream. It was absolument magnifique. Light, balanced, nutty, creamy, with that unmistakable depth only pistachio can offer when done properly. Paired with a velvety latte, it was a moment of pure indulgence.

I also enjoyed their pear croissant, but to be honest, every croissant I’ve tried here is in a league of its own. Whether filled with pear, raspberry, or Saskatoon berry, they’re consistently the best croissants I’ve found in Calgary. No shortcuts, no compromise. The dough is airy yet buttery, the fillings generous and refined. This is pastry with integrity.

The coffee is equally well-crafted, offering smooth, bold flavor that speaks of quality beans and a good barista’s hand. While this is not an inexpensive place, it is true French patisserie, and every bite justifies the price. It is a treasure to be savored slowly.

The shop is located conveniently on 17th Ave SW, with cozy indoor seating and a few outdoor tables. There’s a charm to the space, though I gently encourage a little upkeep in two areas: the baseboards and counters could use a fresh coat of paint, and the pastry display glass deserves a deep clean to let the beauty of their creations shine through. These are not complaints, but humble suggestions to further elevate the visual experience.

We’ve also enjoyed their stand at the Calgary Farmer’s Market. It’s only a shame that, due to vendor regulations, they’re unable to serve their excellent coffee there.

Staff are typically warm and welcoming, many of them Francophone. If you speak French, this is a perfect place to feel at home.

Je vous souhaite beaucoup de succès et que votre passion pour la pâtisserie continue de fleurir à Calgary. Merci pour tant de délices.

This place is a piece of Paris in the Canadian prairies. Don’t rush it, savor it.

Loved this place but I paid for two almond croissants and got one. Didn’t open the bag till I was at my destination. No one answers the phone. Please take care of your customers.

I have to share how much I absolutely adore the beautiful fruity croissants here! So far I have tried the mango and coconut croissant as well as the raspberry croissant. The gooey jammy goodness inside wrapped in all those layers of soft and crunchy pastry is a force to be reckoned with. My absolute favourite pastries I’ve tried. Thank you black sheep!
P.s the hot chocolate is also absolutely to die for 🙏🏻

Low quality croissant. I arrived right at opening and got one of their first croissants of the day. It tasted like a day old grocery store croissant…heavy and thick, not light, fluffy, or flaky. It took effort to finish it. Looked pretty but that’s about it.
I also bought a Kouign-amann to go and same thing, old and stale, that one I threw out after two bites.

My favorite spot for pastries in Calgary, and also the best baguette in town. The staff is always nice. I really enjoy flowers incorporated in recipes, which is hard to find (oh, the blueberry and lavender croissants or the violet latte!), and this place does it extremely well. I'm just dreaming of the day where they'll make spruce tip jelly and cranberry croissants for Christmas (and why not some chestnut creme with confit chestnut ones too).

Chocolate milk
I ordered chocolate milk and it's just right. Not too much chocolate or sweet. I also tried the almond croissant and felt like it was too sweet for my liking. Very french. The sitting area is not the best but it's cool!

Didn’t like the chocolate chaud—too sweet with an uneven texture. The cup wasn’t clean and came without a tray or saucer, which wasn’t great. The chocolate Viennois was better; the whipped cream was nice but way too much, taking up half the cup. The pain au chocolat was really good, though! But the Paris Brest was a letdown—the choux pastry wasn’t fresh and tasted tough and bland.

Going to Black Sheep Patisserie feels like stepping out of Calgary and right into the heart of Paris. Tasteful decor, incredible cappuccinos, and the most extraordinary pan au chocolat that melt in your mouth. Everything on the menu is delicious, but the millefeuille, chausson aux pommes, and the Religieuse Caramel are absolute must haves.

$11.50 for a medium size Mocha. I had to ask and confirm to believe it's true.

Absolutely incredible! This patisserie is a gem. Every pastry is a work of art, both in appearance and taste. The croissants are perfectly flaky, buttery, and melt in your mouth, while the éclairs are filled with the most decadent, flavorful cream I’ve ever had. You can tell everything is made with care and high-quality ingredients. The attention to detail is exceptional, from the texture of the pastry to the balance of flavors. It’s worth every penny and more! If you’re looking for a true patisserie experience, this is the place to go.
