We just ordered dinner from Don's for the first time, on a quest to find a replacement for the much loved Peking Dragon downtown.
Disappointing is the best way to describe this meal.
Obviously the reviews are either bought and paid for, or these people have never had even halfway decent Chinese takeaway.
We ordered what appeared to be their best dish, the salt and pepper squid. It's obviously freezer burnt, you can see it through the batter. It's hard and leathery and fishy. Going in the compost after 4 pieces. Such a waste.
Ginger beef. Soggy. Barely any sauce. Tastes heavily of the baking soda it was dredged in and just wasnt fried properly. The crispy coating never happened with this batch, leaving it mushy and unappetizing. And it's way over spiced. It's more like hot chili beef than Ginger beef. Could be the lack of sauce.
Pork dumplings: Almost good. They're more like every frozen dumpling you can buy at any grocery store though... Not that thick, pillowy, handmade classic dough that dumplings are supposed to be.
Special fried rice is the only thing saving this meal right now. Big portion. Decent amount of veggies and proteins.
If you're looking for you're new go-to Chinese takeaway, this is NOT the place.

The salt and pepper squid was a perfect amount of spice and onions! It was probably better than Hot n fast kitchens squid The sweet and sour pork order could feed 2 or more adults. Ordered pick up and my order was right on time. I will go back and try other dishes!

The front desk person who ordered does not understand English very well, I put an order in and I was trying to coincide with a pick up with my friend to ordered a couple minutes before me. They called me back to say my order is 15 minutes after my friends pick up time so I asked to pick up for the same time as her and the lady kept repeating 7:45 pm… And then she hung up on me. I called back and repeated myself saying I would like my order at 7:30 not 745 and she says no your order for 745 and I said OK fine then I hung up Then they go and cancel the order! After I see the reimbursement, I called them and I was like what is going on. She told me that I didn’t want my order for 745 so she cancelled it. I said I did not ask you to cancel my order. I just wanted to pick it up at 7:30. Horrible horrible service on the phone to go ahead and do this

Had some amazing food and a great customer service experience..
We tried Don’s when it first opened (after HotWok) and it wasn’t great, BUT… we went back for the first time since and it’s so much better. We will definitely come back.
Surprisingly delicious tofu vegetable dish. Noodles and fried rice were on point and the price was reasonable. First time buying from here, and will probably be back since it's very close to home.

There aren't many of these mom+pop restaurants left. I got the shanghai Noodles and Sweet and Sour Pork. Noodles were great, as good as any others I've had. Pork was bit underdone and not super crispy, but still pretty good. Prices were reasonable and portion size is very generous.
Will be back, although might not get the sweet and sour pork again.

Update: July 2023 This place has taken a major down hill slide. Meat portions are a total rip off. Ridiculous small pieces cut in tiny strips! What the hell is that about? Small strips of meat so small you can nearly think it’s noodles. Taste is so so. I don’t recommend. The year before: Very fresh and tasty food I ordered the Cantonese noodles with veggies, chicken, pork and shrimp and was very fresh and flavorful. We ordered the lemon chicken and Ginger beef and really enjoyed both dishes. All the dishes had very nice portions too. I will look forward to eating the left overs for lunch the next day, yum! Glad they are close by because we will be back. Also, all the staff were very welcoming and very friendly upon entering the place. They gave that warm and fussy feeling when you leave. Thank you!

I'm not sure if they know the difference between steamed and fried rice. I asked for steamed rice and received fried. I do not eat fried rice, therefore i threw the rice in the garbage. Half my meal went in the garbage. Complete waste of time and money ordering from this place.
