We went to Modern Ocean for my husband’s birthday yesterday. We have been waiting to try this restaurant for quite a while. To say this experience was amazing, would be an understatement. From the atmosphere, to the staff, to the food, it was all incredible. Madison was our server and she was inviting, warm, and knowledgeable about the menu. She was so great! We had an amazing night and we will absolutely be back. 110% across the board!

Every time we come to this place there is an issue. We came once with our toddler and we were turned around because we were told it wasn’t child friendly by the hostesses which was ok because we understand that some restaurants just aren’t so we left without complaint. The second time we came to the restaurant for oysters we were told they only have type of oyster and we asked why we got the RUDEST response from staff so we just got up and left. They were acting as if it was above and beyond a seafood restaurant to have a variety of options for oysters. Now They have oysters on special for half off so I personally called the staff and asked if this special is available for take-out as we could not come here with our toddler and was I told by staff very affirmatively that it was available. My husband drove there and ordered 8 dozen oysters (over $240 worth) and was waiting around and then was told that they couldn’t do this and that the chef doesn’t want the shuck them for take out. I wouldn’t be leaving this review if it wasn’t for the fact that this was our third time giving this place a chance. The manager saw my husband was with our toddler and there was literally no one else in the restaurant… he could have just honoured what was said over the phone as my husband explained that this was our third time trying to give this place a chance. I understand now why every time we drive by this place is empty. We were frequent visitors to the location in downtown and were never treated so poorly and unprofessionally.

It is obvious why all of your other numerous 1 star reviews all have to do with your staffs' attitudes. I was on the phone the entire time with my husband. He only got upset....as any other person would... after waiting for his order with our toddler then being told no because your chef did not want to shuck that many oysters. Your excuse of not serving us do to "health reasons" was a pitty of an excuse as every other sea-food restaurant in Calgary do take-out orders without hesitation. Once again if you re-read our frustration and most particularly MINE (not my husband's) it is the fact that this is the 3rd time we have tried to give this place a chance. Maybe instead of coming up with witty replies to your one-star reviews you should check on you and your staffs' attitudes towards the people who are trying to come to your establishment and spend money, This review reflects our honest numerous experiences at this place not just words based on a "threat" .

We went for the 1/2 price oysters in October deal. Premium oysters at half the price, best deal in town. We tried a bunch of the new menu items: Garlic buns, seafood roll, shrimp toast, and black cod. We will be back and definitely recommend. Kyle was a fantastic server and knew is wine pairings.

Modern Ocean impressed me from the jump! Beautiful decor, friendly staff, a knowledgeable server and outstanding food! I love to ask servers for their favorite items and was thrilled with suggestions for drinks, appetizers, steaks and dessert - our server was a pro! Modern Ocean was a huge letdown. We went there hoping for a nice meal, but it was anything but. First off, the atmosphere is far from family-oriented. The space feels cold and unwelcoming, and it’s clear they don’t cater to families at all. There were no options for kids, and the staff seemed uninterested in making us feel comfortable.
As for the food, the quality was appalling, especially considering the high prices. The seafood we ordered tasted old and lacked any real flavour. Portions were tiny, and the dishes looked like they were carelessly prepared. For what we paid, we expected at least some effort, but it was all extremely disappointing.
It’s no surprise the place was almost empty when we visited—clearly, others have figured out it’s not worth the money. The lack of atmosphere, poor service, and overpriced, subpar food left us regretting our choice to dine here. If you’re looking for a family-friendly place with quality food, skip Modern Ocean. There are much better options in town that actually care about their customers and serve food worth paying for.

The service was impeccable; our server was knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. They guided us through the menu, which features a fantastic array of fresh seafood dishes with a modern twist.
We started with the oysters on the half shell, which were simply sublime—plump, fresh, and perfectly chilled. For the main course, I opted for the grilled octopus, and it was cooked to perfection—tender with a delightful char, served on a bed of vibrant seasonal vegetables. My dining partner chose the salmon, and it was equally impressive—flaky, flavorful, and beautifully plated.
The highlight, however, was the dessert: a deconstructed key lime pie that was both refreshing and indulgent. It was the perfect ending to a memorable meal.
Overall, Modern Ocean is a must-visit for anyone in Calgary who appreciates high-quality seafood in a beautiful setting. I can’t wait to return and explore more of their creative menu

We went to Modern Ocean for a dinner out and it was fabulous! We were served promptly and had refreshments brought quickly. The truffle fries were seasoned and salted just right and the striploin was cooked perfectly to medium rare. The appetizers looked great but we opted for a dessert and the carrot cake was literally the icing on the cake. Will come back for sure!

I would give zero if I could, this restaurant is so stingy with its servings make sure you eat before you come here I have never spent so much money for such little food. Even the food was mid, save your self hundreds and go somewhere else I feel SCAMMED. 4 oysters, 5 scallops, a slice of bread with crab and lobsters zest not even noticeable, and a white fish for 225!!!! Plus 2 drinks Christ!!! Waitress was great and fast.
