Shiki Menya was hands down the best ramen I’ve ever had. From the depth of flavor in the broth to the perfectly cooked noodles, every bite was outstanding. The atmosphere adds to the experience; it’s lively yet welcoming and the staff are warm, attentive, and passionate about what they do. This is one of those places that defines Calgary’s food scene, and honestly, your trip won’t feel complete without trying it.

Food is overrated and overpriced. Musics way too loud, considering someone who loves loud music. Weird policies making everyone pay under the same bill.

Delicious, finally a ramen place that isn't afraid of salt! The authentic tonkotsu is amazing and the closest thing I've found to the ramen I loved in Japan. The aburi chasu app is also very good, fatty, but not too heavy. I only wish they were open for dinner on weekdays so I could go more than once a week. Music volume may not be for everyone but it's fun and not deafening, especially if you're eating solo.

As a party of three, we had to wait in line for 20-30 minutes at around lunchtime for a spot. The ramen is good, but is not leaps and bounds above other respectable ramen shops in the city and is not worth waiting that long in line for.

Well, I finally visited the legendary Shiki Menya after hearing so many people call it the best ramen in Calgary. I ordered the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen and was really disappointed.

1. The egg wasn’t marinated at all.
2. The noodles looked and tasted like spaghetti.
3. The broth was extremely salty and overly peppery.
4. It tasted more like chicken broth than tonkotsu.

Sadly, this was the worst ramen I’ve had in Calgary—and also the most expensive.
I had high expectations, but it just didn’t live up to the reputation.

There's spaghetti in Tonkotsu black ramen. That's all you need to know.

It's been forever since I was here. Ramen was even better than I remember and Asahi on tap. What else is there in life?

I visited Shiki Menya this weekend with a friend — both of us have dietary restrictions and do not eat pork. Unfortunately, most of the ramen on the menu is pork-based, with only one option available in chicken broth. That alone is limiting, but what truly disappointed me was that even this sole chicken-based ramen was overwhelmingly salty — so much so that the taste lingered in my mouth all day, and I felt parched for hours afterward.

We even mentioned this to the server at a nearby bubble tea place (we never planned on going there but we were sooo parched agter having that ultra high sodium broth) and they immediately knew which ramen we had — she said she had it once and wouldn’t have it again due to the sodium levels.

I understand that pork is a staple in many ramen kitchens, but many other ramen spots do offer broth substitutions (e.g., chicken, miso, veggie) or at least make their non-pork options memorable. If you're going to offer only one non-pork ramen, please ensure it's crafted thoughtfully. Calgary has a large Muslim, Jewish, and vegetarian population — it wouldn’t hurt to accommodate more diverse preferences.

To be fair, the atmosphere was enjoyable, and the service was warm and efficient. But the lack of options and the poor execution of the only alternative dish make it hard to justify a return visit unless the menu evolves.

Ok overall. The broth was ok and I liked the noodles. The chili goma was not spicy at all and it had little clumps of ground pork in it or something - not very pleasant. The music was stupid loud beyond being able to talk and we had to move outside. Was annoying the Ramen didnt come with chili oil which cost extras, same with eggs and char sui.

It felt like it was trying to be counter-culture but the food didn't hit hard enough to sell me on it. In the end it was a gentrified western version of a classic Japanese blue-collar workaday food that was both more expensive and worse. I wouldn't go back.

There is better Ramen in Calgary, not worth the hype. Oh and they have a no split bills policy and automatic 20% gratuity on groups of 6 or more.

Ritual for a great Menya experience:
Come 10-20 mins before open. Dont bring a massive group of indecisive or impatient people. Make sure everyone knows what they want. I don’t waste my time on drinks or apps, however, if you must, order drinks at the same time as food, and have the app come out with your ramen. This way you get fed fast, and the tables turn so more people get to enjoy the experience. Finish your bowl of ramen too. No printed menus so why not look online ahead of time?

My ramen was delicious, ordered the veggie goma, love the meatless options ❤️. Server called me “my queen” 😎. Food was fast.
