Sole is our favourite place to have karaoke night! They have larger private rooms that fit up to 20 people and a good selection of popular songs to sing

We visited Sole for a Karaoke night out, it was a party of 6 people. We booked the small room which has a capacity of 12 people. We did not eat here so I can’t review the food. Overall, it was ok.
Pros:
-quick drink service
-clean and spacious bathrooms
-doorbell inside the room to ring for a server means you don’t need to leave the room to flag down a server, which is convenient.
-fair pricing for booking rooms (except for the gratuity which I explain below)

Cons:
-there is an untold mandatory gratuity of 18% for parties of 5 (or 4, I can’t recall exactly) or more. This isn’t shown anywhere on the website or when we were texting with Kevin from Sole when booking a room. I think Sole needs to make sure they say upfront that customers will be charged a mandatory gratuity for parties larger than 4 or 5 people. Being told at payment time feels disingenuous. If we were told ahead of time we would have no problem.

-we were only shown the giant binders of songs and how to create a queue of songs from the numbers in the binders. This is a painfully slow process. The binders do not have all of the latest songs either.
The server did not tell us that there is a merciful button on the remote where you can search by artist or by song directly through the karaoke machine. This was told to us by our friend who has visited before and who is Korean so he can understand what the remote buttons say since the buttons were in Korean characters. This button saved us SO MUCH TIME. And it has popular, up to date songs! Why isn’t this shown to us at the beginning by the server? Please start doing this it will save customers so much time!

-whenever we would sing duets the score at the end would be 00, no matter who was singing and with any song. We thought something was wrong with one of the microphones? We didn’t figure out why it was doing that.

All in all, if the duet function worked and mandatory gratuity rule was upfront, this review would be a 4/5 stars.

One of the servers with a tattoo that "served" us was not friendly in the slightest despite no initial disputes. She would barge into the room with just pure anger and collect empty water jugs. Even after collecting them, one of our friends had to go back to the kitchen at least twice to request and bring the refilled jugs back to the room. Significantly destroys the comfortable atmosphere the place has.

I came by myself as I am a visitor from a different province and do not know anyone in Calgary. This karaoke experience is very different from where I am from. There is no open area to sing in front of the public. There are only private rooms available for rental.

I asked if I can join a room of people because I didn't want to rent a room for just myself. I was told this is not allowed for some reason by a worker. I then bought a beer and knocked on the door of a full room to see if the people would let me join. I politely asked if I could join them but was greeted with "private only" by a TD bank worker as they were having a work party event.

I found the atmosphere not very open and welcoming to a visitor. It felt as if I had to be apart of their TD work club and pay the establishment first just to sing a song. It is a strange work culture mentality out here with little sense of community.

Where I am from it is all open free karaoke for everyone and you sing infront of other people and other singers. This is how you improve your voice and get better. The community here felt overly private, unfriendly, and not very welcoming to a visitor. I would not come back here.
