This use to be my go-to place for sushi until my order today. Yam had barely any tempura batter and was hard. Fitness role had avocado that was black. There was no one in the reasturant so I'm not sure why the quality was so lacking.
Really really wanted to like Taiyo more! I ordered ramen and sushi. The ramen broth was not as flavourful as I was hoping for, quite bland. The sushi was good but fell apart easily. Portion sizes are worth the money though, and friendly customer service!
Taiyo is a Japanese restaurant hidden away in the outer limits of northwest Calgary. It deserves to be near the top of anyone's list of excellent dining opportunities in the city. It is definitely worth a special trip. Taiyo offers a wonderful menu running the gamut from sushi and sashimi, through various noodle and ramen dishes, a myriad of great salads and much much more. The service is friendly and polite and the prices reasonable for such quality, tastiness and portion sizes. Highly recommended for in-restaurant dining.
Very tasty food. Close to home love it. ❤️
I haven't been back here for quite sometime but the service is still amazing and food quality, presentation and taste great!
This was the worst sushi I have ever eaten! The avocado was over ripe and gave the rolls a mushy texture. The cooked food was bland. The miso soup had no flavor. Our son was sick the next day and we are pretty sure the raw fish was bad because it was also too soft. We are from Vancouver and if this is what people in Calgary think is good sushi I’d hate to see what they consider bad sushi.
Beautiful presentation for my Mom’s birthday tonight. Everything was so fresh, and delicious!
I ordered the salmon sashimi salad and ate it at home, I ended up getting sick that night. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and thought it was just me, so my kids and I dined in a few days later and had the salad again. All 3 of us ended up getting sick and having to use the bthrm asap at home. I found the salmon tasted weird and off, compared to when we used to come here often.
Sashimi was good. But the rolls are a bit disappointing. There's a ton of rice in them and not much fish. House roll pictured here. 70 of the roll is rice!
I've been going to Taiyo for many years, and have never been disappointed. One thing I love about this place is that when the Chefs receive your order they will take the time to arrange it beautifully and will often add an extra piece or two at no charge to bring the presentation together. The restaurant is very clean, small and cozy, and the servers are friendly and professional.

Love this restaurant, great sushi. Staff is very friendly, wonderful customer service.
This place is absolutely a gem!Went there for lunch today. It seems like they are open again for lunch on weekend only.Every one of staff was wearing the mask which makes customers feel more comfortable while eating with masks-off.Their sushi combos were way better than I had hoped for.Service was excellent. The only sad part is that they don't have bento boxes they used to have, but then I was told that new menus will be available shortly after next couple of weeks. So excited to try it out!
A nice welcoming experience... even in these times...I ate Takoyaki for the first time, i was not disappointed.
One of the best take-out experiences in Calgary.I've tried many other sushi places in the city, but this will be my go to restaurant.Awesome place to take away or eat in.Worth a try if you haven't done yet.Fresh sashimi and amazing sushi rolls are reasonably priced.Staff are friendly and welcoming all the time! Can't wait to have my family dining here again.
