I am so impressed. We had a reservation for our wedding anniversary in late November which we were compelled to cancel as we are both in high-risk groups wrt the pandemic and numbers were beginning to edge up in the area. The owner was most tactful and diplomatic. We ordered our desired menu for take-out, a first time experience with a take-away from a 5 star venue. Once again the service was exemplary, and the food was exceptional. We have absolutely nothing to observe upon other than it was perfect!
This must be the place! When I dream about a dining experience this is it. Set in the beautiful Rocky Mountains this restaurant hits it out of the park time and time again. I’ve eaten through their menu many times over and haven’t a single complaint, in fact, I have a few recommendations; try the bruschetta, you can never go wrong with the fish and always trust the wine pairings. Each time we go we’re remembered and welcomed back, that’s truly what it’s all about. Sitting on the patio under the heaters with a blanket and a bottle of red, this must be the place!
My mom and I ate here last night and felt the food was exquisite. The salad was my absolute favourite, so many wonderful flavours. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic. Over all I have to say this was the best meal I’ve had at a restaurant. Highly recommended if your looking for a flavourful treat.
We really enjoyed ourselves! We both enjoyed our parsnip soup (which would have been next level with some bread...). My partner had the short ribs, and I had the mushroom risotto. The portions were generous, and well done. The menu is small, but delicious. We shared a bottle of wine, which we did find to be overpriced. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was really lovely. We would recommend to anyone!
The food was absolutely fantastic, and the staff was wonderful as well. Lots of nice wines to choose from to pair with the meal.Their take on bruschetta was unique and delicious. The portion sizes had us feeling perfectly satisfied, not hungry or overfilled.
Food tasted amazing, service was awesome.Unfortunately I got food poisoning from the chicken. My wife had the pork and was just fine, however I was not.
I’m going to start my comment by being a true Canadian: I’m sorry to be writing a negative comment because it’s a small family owned business - this was a well recommended place with an expensive price point but it did not match up to either both. Both our meat plates were undercooked and the rice and risotto tasted re-heated. With the main plates averaging 32-36$, the expectations are higher and we regret not sending the plates back. The service was good, and I just hope the critique will be taken in consideration given there has been many good reviews in the past.
We had not been to The Trough in a few years and it used to be quite good. Not sure what has happened but we will not be going back. We spend a lot of time in Canmore and love to support the local restaurants but the food here was over priced and mediocre. The Bruschetta was just small raw tomatoes cut in half and on bread with a slice of bacon on top. The pork was average at best and over priced at $40. The chicken was overcooked and even our $12 cocktails were barely drinkable; two of us did not finish our drinks. Maybe with how busy Canmore is this summer the restaurants don’t have to worry about quality but we were terribly disappointed and out $300 for 5 people. It’s like they don’t have professionals in the kitchen or behind the bar. Sorry to write this but just a bad disappointing dinner for our daughters 21st birthday.
Very enjoyable dinner. A trip to Trough is worth it just to try their creative take on bruschetta. Must have dish. The only knock was the menu on their website wasn't updated. We started the night quite disappointed as the website menu had a few dishes we were very excited to try. But thankfully we still enjoyed our dinner. Canmore has some great restaurants and Trough is one of them.
Wonderful food. Good service. Very knowledgeable about their food. Nice to see a small offering of food on the menu, that makes me confident that it was definitely fresh.I will be keeping this on my list of favorite canmore restaurants for a long time to come.

Carefully prepared food. Very good. But not exciting. Service good but cool. Given the high ratings, I expected to be wowed. I was not. I was satisfied. But not “impressed”.
This is our third time here and it was great. My husband had the ribs and my sister and I had the lamb shoulder. The lamb was succulent. It came with yellow beets, potatoes and mushrooms which were delicious. My husband's ribs were fall off the bone and fabulous. I would definitely recommend eating here. It's a small restaurant and you should make a reservation.
Was given a recommendation by a colleague in 2012 to try the restaurant, only made it out there in summer of 2019. I’m definitely looking for the restaurant to reopen and order the steak tartare or maybe even two. Come for the food stay for the people.
Another wonderful dinning experience at the Trough. Brought a business associate from Vancouver who was most impressed. Met chef Tyler who took the time to say hello. Class act all around.
My wife and I dined here after not doing so for two years (no reason other than we try other places when we come to Canmore). Last time was spectacular and this time was the same. We were seated promptly and were given a nice table. We both ordered the mushroom soup for starter and it was amazing. It has just enough truffle to enhance the flavour rather than mask it. We ordered a nice Pinot noir from their excellent wine list and it was nice to see the waitress decant and aerate it. For mains I had their Lamb dish which is made with Indian spices. It’s fantastic, the lamb was fresh and the flavours were amazing. My wife had the Duck which she also loved. For dessert my wife had the Chocolate Bomb and I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding ... both were perfect. Service was outstanding ... we asked not rush with our courses and it was perfectly done. This is a must try in Canmore.
