This place is great. The food is the real deal. The atmosphere is fun The manager(Yolanda) is WONDERFUL. She makes the best margarita in Alaska. We met the owner Jose and what a nice person. If you want great mexican food and a great time go to Don Jose's and ask for Yolanda

Make sure they aren't short staffed or there may be issues like what we had. Seated right away, served water, chips and salsa right away as well but then waited around 20 mins to be greeted by our server/waiter. They apologized for the wait and that they only had 2 servers for the while restaurant. This was on a Saturday evening 6-7pm. We didn't receive a side order and they ran out of meat for the Mexican Burger that my son ordered. So he had to wait longer for his replacement order because we weren't notified of that until the other orders had started coming out. The Tamale masa was very dry almost as if it was older and reheated. Sorry DJ's but just adding an honest review.

We’ve had Mexican food in a lot of places, and honestly didn’t expect to find some of the best in Alaska—but Don Jose’s delivered. The chips were hands-down the best we’ve ever had: warm, crisp, and paired with a fresh, flavorful queso that stood out for its quality ingredients. Every dish we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and served in generous portions.

We visited on a quiet day, and the atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. Mateo, our server, was attentive and thoughtful—he double-checked ingredients for our child with a food allergy and shared helpful local tips without being over the top.

If you’re in Anchorage and craving really good Mexican food, this place is absolutely worth it.

So much better than gallos

Wow what a change from a year ago, and not good. Waitress was great but everything else was poor quality, also did not tell us re charge for chips/salsa. Food was lukewarm and therefore not very appetizing. They do have good beer but I can get that at almost any restaurant/bar.

We went to Don Jose’s for dinner and were disappointed. The menus were inconsistent. The burger my child ordered was disappointing, the meat tasted off and the bun was flattened and tasted too greasy and stale. The house margaritas we ordered was warm and flavorless. The chips and salsa were 8$ and the servers never offered water.

Stopped in for a quick lunch after at least a year since visiting this location. Waitress was super polite & very courteous. 5 stars for her. However, I ordered a grilled chicken quesadilla and water. I also asked for chips & salsa, since they hadn’t been served yet. The grilled chicken quesadilla had about 4 pieces of chicken in the entire thing. Additionally, when I got my check, I was appalled to see that my total was $22. I got a $17 quesadilla and a glass of water? Buyer beware… chips & salsa are no longer included with your meal price at this restaurant. I was charged an additional $5 for a basket of chips and 2 tiny sides of salsa. I only ate 1/2 of one salsa. Hard lesson to learn, so I just want to let future patrons know, so you are not surprised like I was.

It’s been a while since I’ve been here but all the staff members were absolutely amazing. Ask for Felix the Cat (LOL), he will absolutely put a smile on your face!! Everything was great. Thank you Felix and staff!! Thank you for good food and drinks!!

I requested the bartender Diomaria to make my margaritas with extra lime. They were very good. I also had shrimp tacos. The shrimp were juicy and taco ingredients were fresh and crisp. The sauce was very flavorful. Will be returning here often.

I like that you pay for pre entree tortilla chips and salsa so I enjoy more of the dinner instead of gorging on chips. The Naked Burrito was great and still more than I could eat.

Great service from Angel the other night. My elderly folks can be a little challenging for servers, but she did a great job being patient and helpful with them, and making sure she had their orders correct. The food was great!
