You have got to visit this place if you like smoked fish. The owner, Jim, is a "mad scientist" making the BEST SMOKED FISH on the planet. Not only do you get to taste test, but he may even give you a tour of his "lab" like he did for me. Right now I'm eating one of his treasures 2 weeks after we retured home to Chicago and I felt the need to give a review about how wonderful my experience was at Saltwood Smokehouse in Seward, AK..

We were lucky enough to stop by Saltwood Smokehouse on the outskirts of Seward, around 1pm after lunch on a rainy day. The hours on Google Maps are not accurate, so don't plan around the listed 8-5. There's no website hours either, so make sure to pull in if you see that "open" sign lit up. Jim Woodside welcomed us in and immediately asked if we had tasted his products - upon hearing our "no," his face lit up as he said, "well would you like to?"We tasted Jim's smoked salmon, black cod, and four different dip/schmears. It was an amazing adventure of flavor exploration that made me wonder how anyone buys those sad boxes of gift shop smoked salmon. Both the salmon and cod were salty, savory, and melt-in-your-mouth exquisite. Both go for $30/half lb, which is easily competitive with gift shop prices we saw (~$20-30/half lb) for a far superior product. You'll get a discount in-store, $55 for a pound, even for three 1/3 lb black cods ($75 on his website). Jim gives you a cold pack and paper bag for insulation, which helps keep your fish fresh for up to 24 hrs. We also saw the schmear on the menu for The Mermaid Grotto nearby, and per Jim, there are a few other local businesses that you can find his products. Absolutely worth a stop, if only to give it a try.

We bought some smoked salmon and smoked black cod. Also, salmon and black cod dip. Our favorite was the smoked salmon. We picked up crackers and enjoyed it 2 nights for dinner.

Holy smokes- literally. Get the black cod. And then get some more because you'll devour it. The best smoked fish I've ever had. The salmon is great too of course, and it's brined in honey and wine so it tastes more unique than typical smoked salmon. But I've never had smoked black cod and I've never had a smoked fish like this. A+++

Flavor and texture are top notch. The smoked salmon has a particular umami taste that you can only taste in the finest cured ham. The flavor is like eating the ocean and the forest.To me, the smoked fish is good enough by itself. No cream cheese, chives, onions needed. Just the fish and a small glass of vodka.

Smoked salmon and dips are so tasty! Smoked cod sold out so we can’t try that. Tasting was great, the owner told us about the whole process. Hit this place first when you arrive town so you will have the perfect snack for other activities!

Randomly decided to stop in and happened to catch a tasting with owner Jim. All I have to say is wow. Leaving in two days so couldn’t get much, but we will be doing an online order once we’re home from our trip.
