This is a hidden gem. I'd give more than 5 stars if they were available. We looked at the menu on line and there were atypical offerings that attracted us. The food was excellent. My wife and I shared the beef steak tartare appetizer. It was a different presentation, but each bite was better than the one before. She then had the snapper in banana leaves with a side of sweet potatoes, and I had the duck breast with a papaya salad and sambal. Both portions were ample and we skipped dessert. A sign of a great chef is when food needs no added seasoning. None needed any. They also have an excellent wine selection. My only negative, which I make everywhere, is the noise level.

Upscale decor but relaxed atmosphere. Valet parking is available. The food and drinks are worth the visit.
Panda Not Panda (gin based) cocktail 10/10
Crab Fried Rice 10/10
Banana Leaf Grilled Snapper 10/10
Lots of indoor seating for small and big parties, two bar areas and outdoor seating available.
Spent $150 for a starter, a drink, 2 entrees+ tip and valet.

I wish I could give the food 6 stars out of 5. The lamb rib appetizer might have been the best thing I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Seriously. The short ribs, served like lettuce wraps, were also phenomenal. Finally, my wife said the snapper was the best piece of fish she has ever had anywhere. All were flavor explosions of extreme extra goodness, and the portions were more than ample.
Quite possibly the best meal, from top to bottom including service, I have ever had in Birmingham. Please rush out to eat at Current Charcoal Grill....it really is that good and we need to keep this one around for a very long time.

I had the scallop appetizer which was tasty, even though pricey for 2 scallops and the crab fried rice... we didn't taste or see any crab in it. Drinks , valet parking and atmosphere were fabulous!

We came here for my friend's birthday and it was a great choice! The food is fresh and delicious. The service is excellent: recommendations, timing of small plates and entrees, as well as demeanor. Highly recommend this place! They have options for veggie, land, or sea lovers. Plus it's ask fresh!

Excellent restaurant and magnificent atmosphere. The short ribs and kimchi are amazing. And the miso soup was the best I’ve had. I love this place.

(French customers, sorry!)
It feels like a station hall and it's cold, keep your sweater or your coat when coming to eat... ?
We are far from a warm restaurant, literally and figuratively!
The food is not bad, but it is not transcendent either, and the quantities of the dishes are new cuisine style. In any case, it is not worth the prices displayed.
Write on Google $50 to $100, but much closer to 100 than $50 per person and provided you share starter and dessert!
Conclusion, you will find better and for less expensive! This restaurant does not live up to the image it wants to give itself...

The food and service was very good. It was lunchtime so the atmosphere was very quiet. I would definitely go again.

I'm a self proclaimed food critic. Born and raised in new orleans. To say the least- I'm not impressed with peoples fancy menus. But before we touch on this fancy menu- let's talk about the experience leading up to us stumbling upon Current. We visited multiple area restaurants claiming to be open until 10pm (it is a Sunday). It's 9:15 and I call Current just to confirm we could be fed. The gentleman that answered the phone informed me kindly, of course we are open until 10, please come in to be seated.
Our waitress greeted us. We both ordered unsweetened tea. She returned to the table with 2 glasses almost full and informed this was the last of the tea but she was brewing us more (instead of just saying "sorry we are out") This fact might impress me the most as I am an avid unsweetened tea drinker. Most folks would have just said ?♀️
Now onto the food. Food was excellent. We had carrot app and miso soup. Both delicious. Carrots so fresh, they've surely never touched plastic. Delightful. I had the snapper on banana leaf. My fiancee had tiger prawns with fresh mango. 5 stars, both had Flavor profiles so deep, I might not drive back home to new orleans. Order a side of sweet potatoes with curry mayo, this is a must, if you like sweet potatoes.
Thank you to everyone at Current for turning two upset hungry people into two thoroughly impressed people- now willing to make a drive out here to eat again.
If you consider yourself a foodie- you absolutely need to give them a visit.

If you're ever in Birmingham, this restaurant is a must-try! From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel so welcome and were incredibly attentive. I visited with a coworker for the first time, and we had an exceptional experience. While I personally prefer my kimchi a bit crunchier, everything else—from the drinks to the appetizers, main course, and dessert—was absolutely top-notch. This place truly deserves a 5-star rating!

Cocktail was good- app was pretty good- prawns very dry/fishy- they did offer me an exchange and got the crispy shrimp noodles. Not great- ate a few bites and gave up. Place has great atmosphere but very overpriced for not so great food.
Great spot for an upscale lunch without it being too expensive.
