I’m not sure why this place has such great reviews. We ordered the "special," which was a brisket sandwich with cheese, bacon, and fries, but there was nothing special about it. The brisket was dry and bland, the bacon was overly salty and undercooked, and the overall meal was disappointing. To make things worse, our server seemed more interested in chatting with other customers than checking on us. The prices were also steep for what you get - $20 each for the special felt unreasonable. I wouldn’t recommend dining here.

Choose the special as usually specials are discounted items on the menu and come to find out it was 20 dollars per meal. The brisket was unseasoned and had no barbecue on it at all. Fries were fine and service was good too but the price for the flavor was horrible. Would not eat here again. Definitely go to Meat Boss!

I am trying to support our small businesses by eating in downtown Mobile but my two experiences at Cotton State BBQ were not that great. The loaded baked potato was very very dry. Way too much of a potato and too little of the BBQ and other toppings. I wont order that again. Then I tried the State Dog. I got my to go order and walked two minutes to my office and the buns on my dogs were absolutely soaked. I had to peel the buns off and just eat the dogs. Not worth my money for that. Maybe it will get better. We will see. :(

The brisket was soo tender. The ribs were tender and delicious. It is located on Francis St. now.
I dropped into the new location off Conception just to check out the menu and pricing. Lady behind the counter immediately asked for my name to take the order down but didn't even greet me. Once I saw how high the prices were, I told her I changed my mind because the prices went up. She said they have always been the same to which I calmly replied, "not to what I have seen." She rudely told me to have a nice day as I went to walk out with a snarky attitude.
The food is decent but definitely not worth the price. You are better off driving the distance to Meat Boss. Also, if their employees have this bad of an attitude to someone who wants to shop around for a good meal then absolutely not worth anyone's time. I'll make sure to stop anyone from going there to eat in the future.

Always fantastic. Out of the numerous barbecue places we have in Mobile, Cotton State is hands-down my favorite. Could they use more seating? Sure. Could they occasionally give you a little more? Maybe (but usually it’s a good amount). But the taste of their food is second to none. Wish they were in WeMo.

If you like bread and barbecue sauce, then this is your place because that’s all you’re gonna get. My expectations were relatively high based on the reviews (that are all bought, obviously) however, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a step above gas station.. whatever it is that they are selling. Low quality ingredients (proteins) plus poor seasoning does not equate to anything good. Never again and I will never recommend.

We were downtown today for the fountain anniversary celebration and decided to try this place out. The service was excellent with very friendly young ladies taking care of the tables. We had the pork loaded fries and chicken baked potato which were prepared quickly and very delicious! We will definitely be back! Note: I’m only giving 4 stars for the atmosphere and thats because the AC seemed to be struggling.
