Tours of Montgomery is a wonderful place to see some of the best-unknown stories of the Civil Rights and Centennial Hill area. Even though I live in the city there is so much to learn, and Ms. Val has done an amazing job sharing what she knows! Head to her shop as well for a pretty substantial variety of items to commemorate your time in Montgomery!

I am in town for a conference and walked over to see MLK’s house when I happened upon this lovely shop. Ms. Val was so sweet — I was sweating buckets and she handed me a bottle of water and talked to me all about the history of the block — she showed me the famous picture of Dr. King leading the students in protest in front of the historic hotelBen Moore, and then took me outside so she could take my picture in the very same spot. I had such a nice time talking to her and looking at her shop — she has some very cool artwork on display too. Highly worth a visit next time you are in Montgomery!!

Ms. Val was amazing! She knows so much about this area and the history of Montgomery. I learned more from her in 30 minutes about MLK and the history there than I had ever before. This place is definitely worth a visit, so put it on your places to go if visiting Montgomery.

Our Civil Rights sights tour of Alabama was made even more meaningful by meeting and spending time with Val in the Centennial Hill area. She shared with us the history of the neighborhood and the fascinating and heroic work of the neighbors making it personal and alive through stories and anecdotes. We loved learning about Dr King's formative time at the parsonage, the organization meetings at the Harris house, and the community centering at the Ben Moore Hotel and so much more. The movement is less than a full lifetime ago and yet so much is hidden and forgotten by most of America. By design, of course. Thank you Val for showing us inside.

Valerie Smedley is FANTASTIC! Not only is she one of the friendliest people I've ever been blessed to meet, but she gives an impeccable, personal and deep dive tour of historic proportions---literally. PLUS she has a super cool gift shop--I bought a t-shirt that reads: Never argue with anyone Harriet would leave behind Next time I get to Montgomery, I will definitely stop in just to say hello because she's that wonderful--a new friend I adore!
