I visited Selma this morning on a Great Migration trip. As I walked the city just ground myself with history as I stumbled upon the BLACK GEM. I am from Michigan, I walked in and saw BLACK patrons, officers, and working civilians. I felt at home as I listened in on the small talk. I ordered THE BEST salted caramel frappe I ever had. I also bought a white chocolate raspberry scone (I hate scones but needed something sweet). Best scone ever! It was soft, buttery, sweet, and filling!
Thank you all for your taste of hospitality it is much appreciated! Much love!

Nice people, but they're not well versed on how to make the different drinks. A cappuccino and a latte are not the same thing.

Saw an inspirational NBC News feature on this business on 3/9/25. This former spot of a segregated diner is located near the Edmund Pettis Bridge and was central to the Civil Rights Movement. The lovely owner is such a welcoming soul, honoring the history of this building, and celebrating the inclusive gathering space it has become in her community. Maybe we will visit someday! It seems to be a very important spot for locals, serving up delicious food and drink, a history lesson, and lots of kindness.

Amazing history of how far we’ve come captured in a coffee shop.
