Ribs and burnt ends were good. Mac & cheese a bit runny , red beans and rice were good.

Tell them the red beans and rice need to be in a tin. Rather than a basket. That was rather weird. The meat was out of this world. Cornbread was awesome. Red beans and rice a little spicy.

It was a cold rainy day and I hadn’t had Satchmo’s in awhile. I decided to order pickup. I got the blackened fish fillet with rice and a small side of mac and cheese. Their house made remoulade is perfection. (No picture of the entree because I ate it too fast.) The macaroni and cheese is to die for (picture included.) Everything hit the spot. Definitely recommend them. Service is quick and friendly.

saving for the life changing jambalaya I had here a few years ago
We tried Jambalaya rice for the first time and it didnt disappoint. Very flavorful and we enjoyed every bite. It was a take out and I wish we ordered more. Small portion size and barely would fit an entree for 1 person.

As someone who has encountered far too many sad efforts at Cajun, Creole and/or other New Orleans cooking/dishes outside of NOLA, Satchmo's was a real surprise. We thought it was just a BBQ place, but decided to roll the dice on a few things when we got the menu. Along with BBQ and associated sides, we got the catfish bites and beignets. Should have tried more of the NOLA inspired dishes. Everything was good, but the catfish bites really stood out. And most places outside of NOLA either have no idea what a beignet is, or they fail miserably with the execution. (Full disclosure - they're hard to do well.). Satchmo's did a very good job with theirs - just could have used a bit more powdered sugar. All in all, a great experience.

Really enjoyed the food. My wife and I shared the ribs, brisket, red beans and rice, and tots. I had the King Gumbo to myself because my wife is allergic to seafood. Our favorite was definitely the ribs.
Satchmo’s is a neat little hole-in-the-wall that serves up excellent Cajun and BBQ. Cool vibe and friendly staff.
Go there, you won’t be disappointed and your stomach will thank you.

We ordered 1/2 lb of smoked brisket which comes with four slider buns, with a side of dirty rice. Each table has a bottle of sweet and spicy bbq sauce and other hot sauces. Everything was delicious and filling for my husband and I. We'd definitely come back!

Overall good but stick with the ribs. The service was very good, but the restaurant itself could use a bit of cleaning. I still recommend trying it!

The jambalaya has a medium spice level. The jalapeno cornbread is mild. The two offset each other beautifully for me. My husband enjoyed the catfish bites. Chicken fingers were good for the kids.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ – “Creole in a strip mall? Believe it.”
“Come for the catfish, stay for… well, more catfish.”
Flagstaff at night feels like someone dimmed the world just to see if you’d trip over a curb. Satchmo’s leans right into that vibe—tucked into a small strip mall, low lighting, jazz playing softly in the background, and a Louis Armstrong trumpet poster hanging in the bathroom. Not gonna lie… I don’t think I’ve ever been stared at by a jazz legend mid-pee, but Louis looked like he was about to really blow down the walls.
The only things keeping this from a perfect five stars? The gumbo desperately needed seasoning, and the beignets were a tad overcooked. But other than that—this place is phenomenal.
🍽 Dish Ratings
Fried Catfish – 9.2
Recommended by the genius at the counter—seriously, the kind of cashier who could probably sell sand to a camel. Best fish I’ve ever had—any type, anywhere. Perfectly seasoned, flaky, and borderline spiritual. Smoky, rich, and so good it makes you want to start talking with a Cajun accent you haven’t earned.
Jambalaya – 9.1
Flavor that dances like a trumpet solo—bold, warm, and with just enough kick. Could’ve used more meat, but still an absolute hit.
Macaroni & Cheese – 8.9
Some of the best I’ve ever had. The crumb topping deserves its own Instagram account. Slightly dry, but still miles ahead of most.
Gumbo – 5.2
Sadly, the rhythm section fell apart here. Flat, bland, and missing that deep, soulful note good gumbo should hit. My girlfriend’s first gumbo, and now she thinks it’s all like this. I promise it’s not.
Beignets – 6.8
Still sweet, still satisfying, but slightly overcooked—like a jazz note held just a little too long.
Service was warm, friendly, and thanks to the cashier’s spot-on recommendations, we ordered like pros. Between the moody lighting, the jazz, and the fact that this place turns “strip mall” into “Louisiana night out,” it’s a must-stop in Flagstaff.
Bottom line:
🐟 Best catfish ever.
🎷 Atmosphere as smooth as the soundtrack.
🍲 Gumbo’s a miss, but Satchmo’s still hits all the right notes.
Final Note: If Flagstaff had more places like Satchmo’s, I’d gladly get lost in the dark here every night. Order the catfish, tip the cashier well, and maybe give Louis Armstrong in the bathroom a wink—he’s clearly rooting for you.
