Really nice “high-end” Mexican restaurant. We had a lunch special- and I had a margarita. Their salsa is amazing - 3 different varieties of deliciousness

The servers were very nice, the restaurant was clean and chips and salsa was good but it stops there. I ordered tamales they were small and filled with mystery meat they claimed to be pork. They looked like hormel tamales from a can. The beans were not made recently and doused in pepper to cover the taste. The cilantro lime rice had a refrigerator taste. My wife ordered the nachos based on the chips that were served at the table. The nachos came on half slices of a corn tortilla and were covered in a thick layer of cheese. The corn tortilla was stale and hard to chew. We also ordered chicken enchiladas they were made from flour tortillas and resembled small wet burritos that tasted bland.

We went during Happy Hour for our friend's birthday. The Hibiscus margarita was delicious and so are the chips and three different salsas. They have the best chips and salsas! Our server Lacy went above and beyond to make sure we're were taking care of and brought my friend out a generous slice of the best Carmel cheesecake which was enough to share with the four of us. Looking forward to returning for another visit soon!

95th birthday party. Huge menu. Large party. What could go wrong haha? Absolutely nothing at this fine establishment. The food was fantastic. The choices were endless. The atmosphere was festive. The service was 5 star, our party didn't need to ask for a single thing, and there were no complaints.
About food. Or service. Or attention. Our server was polite, friendly, and engaged in our fun. One walk past and he'd be back in min w everything he saw missing or empty. They handle large tables on a Saturday night well at Abuelos. Our whole family can't wait to return. Thank you

Update 9/25
Tried their empanadas and was very pleased with the flavor of the filling and the dipping sauce. My friend loved the chimichanga and had to take 1/2 home. I still can't get enough of the murals but hard to get good angles because of the way they have the light shining off them. Once again the server was superb! My out of town friend remembered the old fountain in the center and missed it. I had to laugh since my review last time stressed that too!

I was prepared to be disappointed since so many MX restaurants, esp. chains, serve such bland food in a bland setting, but I was pleasantly surprised! From the courtyard-like feel of a high ceilinged dining room surrounded with colorful murals, sculptures, and paintings, to the cozy side bar area, I was smitten. The warm tortilla chips with an assortment of sauces allowed us time to explore the extensive menu, but once we saw another table had a tortilla bowl that looked fabulous, we had to get that. Excellent choice too since the beans had flavor that was not like that out of a can, the tomatoes, lettuce, guac, were all fresh and whatever that creamy chile con queso sauce was is an excellent accent, and the choice of beef or chicken filling (we had one of each and both were tasty), and I can't believe I ate the whole fresh and crispy tortilla bowl--usually these can taste old-oily, but obviously this one was perfect. The server was attentive but never intrusive, always there to answer a question or refill the drinks. When I mentioned we were there for my birthday, he brought out a surprise velvety flan. The only sad note was my friend mourned the loss of the fountain they used to have and I agree that would have truly added a refreshing sound and oasis like atmosphere which is much needed in this AZ climate esp. with all the record breaking heat. If it were my business, I'd bring it back in a heartbeat with much fanfare and celebratory publicity so people would be even more encouraged to visit and be refreshed and restored!
