I have frequented the restaurants in Westbrook for over 15 years. Links Neighborhood Grill is our go to breakfast and Friday night fish .
Tonight I decided to take visiting friend to Charley's at the Lake.
We arrived for an early dinner hoping to be a quick early evening. We were 6 in our party. As it was a beautiful evening we sat outside. We arrived at 5:15 and sat. Our drink orders were not taken and put in until 6:15 (per the server). Our dinner order was not taken until after 6:45. When we asked why everything was so slow the server stated she was the only person working.
By the time our dinner came out at past 7:00 we were cold and no longer hungry. I asked the server if I could speak to the manager. She stated they had gone home. We. said the service was sub par and I would call tomorrow and speak the manager. 5 min later , the manager/owner (female) came out. She immediately said the service was slow due to fact that customers were always rude to the servers so the servers quit. Then went on to say they had a tiny kitchen. Totally strange. We stated we had been there for 2 hours and it would have been nice to have been told the wait was going to be very long. The manager continued on how it was customers fault and just seemed to just want to argue. We asked for the bill so we could leave. While waiting for our credit cards, a male manager/owner came out and said we could not come back . Seriously? We were a party of 6 all over the age of 66! As if we were the rowdy type.
In all my 66 years, I have never had such an awful experience in a restaurant.
A very simple owner response of " We are short handed tonight and we are so sorry it did not go well for your dining experience. Have desert on us and come back and let us try again". That would have been a respectable owner.
Luckily Westbrook has Links. Charley's and their manager/owner was the absolute worst I have ever dealt with.

So I have gone to Charlies a few times. I decided I would bring family and friends tonight. We arrived at 5:15. Our drink order was not taken until 6:15. Food did not come out until 7:15. Our server, who I have had in the past, stated she was the only server working tonight. When it was 2 hrs and we still sitting outside getting cold and no longer hungry, I asked if I could speak to the manager. When a manager /owner(female) came out , she stated it took a long time as they did not have enough help with servers or in the kitchen due to fact that the customers were rude to the help and so the help quit. ???? We had not been rude, we simply were stating it took over an hour to get our drinks ordered and another hour to get the food. The manager/owner continued to stand there wanting to argue repeating it was the customers fault. We asked her to please bring the bill so we could leave. We gave our credit cards and while waiting for the receipts, another manager/owner (male) came out and told us we didn't need to come back. Seriously? Of course we won't be back. To have terrible service , then add to that ,be blamed the service was bad due to rude customers? We were 6 people all over the age of 65, hardly the fighting kind. A respectable owner/manager would have, should have , simply said, " I am so sorry we were short handed tonight. We should have told you the wait could be long. Please let us make this up to you the next time you come. Let me offer you a nice desert. Not here. It was , the customers are awful and please don't return... Truly one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had in my 66 years! Thankfully Links Neighborhood grill is down around the corner from them and their service is impeccable and their food is great. .

Our Westbrook neighborhood, a group of 38, enjoyed dinner last night at Charley’s at the Lakes. There was great contact with the staff in the planning process, during the meal, and follow up to confirm everything went as planned. We were seated in the private dining room as you enter the restaurant. We ordered from their regular menu so there was a large variety of options and each meal was served perfectly as ordered..no small task for a group our size! The entire staff did an amazing job! Our sincere thanks to General Manager Mikele, Lead Chef Jason, Cooks Sergio and Ivan, Servers Jen and Danielle, Dishwasher Avery. We will be back!

Second, I ordered a Reuben sandwich which was on the menu but for whatever reason unavailableMy outstanding thoughts of Charley’s at the Lake Our server was wonderful, the food we did order was very good and the restaurant was clean and provided a great atmosphere with views of the golf course and western sunset

So glad to see this newly opened restaurant in a lovely setting. We'd enjoyed the previous one for years, but heard the new chef was better. He or she was! It's great to be able to sit out on the patio and look at the golf course and lake for lunch. Our waitress was busy but very friendly, and it turns out she was one of the owners. We told her how much we enjoyed the food, and promised to give them a good review. We loved our fish tacos and club sandwich. Can't wait to try the prime rib dinner on the weekend. We're going back again soon!
