Be sure to ask for Painted Desert visitor center. I asked just for Painted Desert and was directed to the middle of nowhere!
We went to petrified forest in early May because it was on the way to Utah and we had heard about it earlier. Petrified forest, being right off i 40, is such a neat place to stop at. The painted desert and blue mesa were so nice and great. Plus we barely saw anyone and it was so peaceful. I also saw some peiroglyphs and we passed by where route 66 ran through the park. There were also hundreds if not thousands of petrified logs scattered throughout the park that ranged in sizes. Overall, this park was an easy 5 star.
Our visit to the Painted Desert was nothing short of magical—an unforgettable way to spend the day as a family. From the moment we entered the park, we were blown away by the vibrant colors, dramatic landscapes, and peaceful atmosphere that seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction. Every overlook offered a new view, a new photo op, and a new “wow” moment.
What made it even more special was how engaging and active the day was. Between the scenic drive, short trails, ancient ruins, and hands-on history at places like the Petrified Forest and Newspaper Rock, there was something for everyone. We climbed ladders at Alcove House, explored cliff dwellings, sampled trail loops, and even enjoyed ice cream with a view—all while making real memories together.
The Painted Desert isn’t just a place to look at—it’s a place to experience. If you’re looking for a mix of natural beauty, cultural history, and family adventure, this national park is a must. We’ll be talking about this day for years to come.
I saw the Grand Canyon on a helicopter tour, the Painted Desert was part of it. The tour was the most memorable experience I have ever had. Enjoy
The gas station does not work at the moment but the stop was worth it. I’d definitely come back to walk the trails.
Painted Desert is a breathtaking place where colors blend harmoniously, offering a unique natural spectacle. Shades of red, orange, and pink create a living canvas that amazes visitors. Ideal to explore at sunrise or sunset, when the hues are most vibrant. Although facilities such as marked trails are sometimes lacking, the experience remains unforgettable for lovers of nature and exceptional landscapes. A must-see not to be missed for anyone passing through the region!
It makes you feel as if you are in the Jurassic .....
This place was such a surprise to me. I have always heard of The Painted Desert, but I could hardly believe what I was seeing when I finally got there! Every trail and walk had a view of natural beauty that was beyond captivating and surreal. The varying colors and formations are incredibly breathtaking. The Painted Desert quickly became one of my most memorable and favorite places I've been to. I highly recommend a stop here when you are visiting The Grand Canyon!
Beautiful scenery.
So beautiful! If you are looking for awe, this is it.
It was so hot, though, we couldn't linger outside of the car for long.

We had stopped in here several years ago and enjoyed going through the park so while visiting AZ we had to go back and see this beautiful park. There are so many amazing views and colors throughout the park. We took our time and stopped at nearly all the lookout points and we did a few of the hikes as well. There is so much to see here. I highly recommend checking out this beautiful park. If you have a 4th grader you can get in for free with their national park pass.
Sweet views, and super easy to get to...right off of I-40
A must see. Total visit was over an hour. A lot of driving and hiking, and totally worth it.
