An old all time favorite!!

Beloved Di'Nah

Their food is usually good but today, not so much. The taco shell was extremely soggy! I couldn't even pick it up, had to use a fork! It looked and tasted old, even the sour cream was matted. I think they gave me another guests leftovers and just reheated it, SMH. The enchiladas were somewhat better, but was barely even room temperature. Again, wondering if they're reheating guest leftovers from the previous day - especially since I called in my order right when they first opened šŸ¤” everything should've been fresh and piping hot. Won't be going back.

I have been coming to Don Jose’s since I was a toddler. My family came every Christmas Eve as one of my fondest memories. I now frequent our cherished favorite Mexican food restaurant once or twice a week with my husband! We feel like it’s ā€œhomeā€, everyone knows us and the staff is amazing! May I say the food is the best in Arizona!! Take my word, it’s not just the food it’s the atmosphere of so many people who make you feel special the moment you walk through the door! Thank you to the wonderful owners Matt and Allison and all of the staff that we adore! Joe and Karen

I want to preface by saying I don’t typically eat Mexican food. Don Jose is the ONLY authentic Mexican food restaurant that I frequent and genuinely enjoy. I started coming here during my pregnancy with my folks and the entire staff has had the privilege of watching my son grow. My family has been coming here for decades and I now see where their love of this restaurant comes from. The atmosphere makes you feel like you’re ā€œcoming homeā€. There’s a comfort and ease that transports you to a different time. Chefs are phenomenal and staff front to back are kind and focused on customer satisfaction. Also, Phil is fantastic if you have the opportunity to be served by him. We will follow you wherever you go Don Jose!

We enjoyed our recent visit to this neighborhood staple. We opted for the Cheese Crisp and a couple of tacos. Really hit the spot. They now accept credit cards, so you have more options on how to pay.

I started eating lunches at Don Jose in 1966 while I was pregnant with my daughter. I ate there often because I worked nearby. As the years went by we ate there so many times the ā€œoriginalā€ staff knew us by name. When they closed down we were saddened, but were so happy when they sold the business (and recipes) and reopened. My daughter and family and almost every close friend I have continue to enjoy the great food, the family atmosphere, friendly staff and owners. I highly recommend Don Jose’. Best find of 1966 through today!!

Not a good place to eat. Not 🐱 friendly. Terrible people running the place.

The best Mexican food! My family and I have been eating hear since my mom was little. Over 55 years ago. I love the cheese crisps, cheese enchiladas and the beef burritos with red sauce. I don’t live in phoenix any longer. I miss Don Jose so much!

Old school Mexican/American style restaurant.

āž”ļø We love the "retro" vibe and that it's in an Old Pancake house building that uses the syrup containers for salsa.
āž”ļø Homemade Margaritas from scratch (although they could be a tiny bit little better, a bit on the bitter side for the house style).
āž”ļø Extensive menu, fair prices.
āž”ļø Service is the shining star of this place. Servers, buss staff, hosts, all great. This time we had Gina for our server and she was awesome as was the bus and host staff.
āž”ļø Even though the place needs a remodel (although that would take away a bit from the retro feel), it's clean.

We traveled clear over from Mesa just to eat here, and I am glad we did. Good food/service. Careful tho if your table has more than 8 in it they add the tip automatically even if there's only 2 people on a tab.

Step into Don Jose in Phoenix, where classic Mexican vibes have been thriving since 1966! This isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a legacy, and boy, do they deliver on every front.

From the moment you walk in, Matt and Allison make you feel like a VIP. Their energy and friendliness are contagious, and they run the show with style. Now, let’s talk queso—because this white cheese masterpiece deserves its own fan club. Thick, rich, and clinging to your chips like it knows it’s the star of the show. No runny business here, just pure cheesy bliss!

For the main event, I went with the #4 combo: a shredded beef taco and enchilada paired with rice and beans. The meat was tender, flavorful, and downright satisfying. Every bite felt like a celebration of what good Mexican food should be.

Shoutout to Phil, our server, who made sure our dining experience was nothing short of stellar. Quick, attentive, and full of charm—he’s the kind of guy who makes your meal that much better.

Don Jose isn’t just a meal; it’s a tradition. Whether you’re a first-timer or a regular, this is the kind of place that keeps you coming back for more. Five stars all the way!
