I can’t express enough how amazing this place is. My wife and I are expecting our first child, and we weren’t sure how to find out the gender. Chris, the owner, made sure it was an unforgettable experience. He arranged beautiful cupcakes with a gender surprise just for us! I highly recommend this to anyone expecting, it’s a 5-star experience for sure!

10/6/24 - very small shop, good cupcakes, freezer with small batch ice cream. We popped in this particular Saturday after eating lunch at a place nearby. The young lady behind the counter was very polite, there was a good selection of cupcakes to choose from, plus we picked up three quarts of the ice cream.
I will say, the ice cream was most definitely not worth the money. The passionfruit was powdery. I don't know how or why it would taste that way but after one bite I was willing to toss it; there was no saving it in my mind. I think my sister choked it down just so as not to waste money. The pistachio was the best of the three, but still not worth $10. The mint chip was goopy and gooey, not in a good way.
The cupcakes were most definitely the best purchase, but we have a bakery closer to home that's pretty awesome, so unless we're in the Ahwatukee area, we likely would not visit Smallcakes again.

I first tasted small cakes back in North Carolina. The cupcakes were fresh and moist and the lemon one had incredible flavor. When I heard they had one in Ahwatukee AZ where I live I was excited. However I drove out there today to try them and was disappointed. The cupcake did not taste fresh it was crusty and I could tell it was a few days old. The icing on the lemon did not have that lemon flavor but instead I could taste the food coloring which was so over bearing. I could only eat 2 bites and threw it out. Bummer it’s not the same amazing cupcakes as the NC location.

My family and I would order your delicious cupcakes for different occasions when you had a shop in Surprise, we were saddened when it closed. My daughter has been requesting your cupcakes so I placed an order, drove 45 min to pick them up. I thought it’s worth it! I was disappointed when I opened the box, the cupcakes look nothing like they use too. The cake was good but the frosting was off and the cream cheese frosting was lumpy, not smooth at all. The presentation was not what I’m use to with your cupcakes. The birthday cake ones are usually covered in sprinkles, and the lemon drop cupcake was super yellow. I’m hoping this was just an oversight or something. We have had your cupcakes many times, and the cupcakes were always consistent in appearance and taste. Please bring back the original design. I ordered a cake for my wedding. Have a photo of what I wanted which was from their own website. Came in for a taste testing to which they were unprepared and didn't know I would be in. Didn't hold it against them. Ordered my wedding cake with the flavors I chose from the testing. After $170 for a small cake. I asked for navy blue and gold accents. I got a cake with teal and periwinkle colors and the inside was supposed to have fresh strawberries. Majority of my guests said they didn't get any strawberry slices and were asking if i got them. After I found there were maybe 10 small slices. This was disappointing. My cake was also not leveled leaving huge amounts of buttercream on the edges to fill in the gaps. Would not order from here. Especially for your wedding. Unfortunate really. The first photo is what I ordered. 2nd photo is what I got. I asked for no Ferrero Rocher chocolate so that was fine.
Edit from the response. My cake wasn't leveled, strawberries were highly recommended, failed to add any if at all, and colors were off. I paid for the product you promoted on instagram when in reality Safeway would have the same quality.

Ordered a cake today for a Sunday pickup, at 3:30. Found out within 10 minutes, my plans for Sunday changed, called to cancel order, claims she started making cake. Store credit only for $125 dollar cake order, states on receipt (didn’t look at receipt yet!). Also purchased made in store ice cream (3 pints) no bag to take home, hand carried, not great idea on a hot day. Have no idea why I would go back there for my credit. Who makes a special order cake as soon as customer leaves the store for a three day out pick up?

The cake was nicely decorated, which was sadly the only positive thing that I can say. As you can see from the pic of the inside, the cake is wet, dense and heavy like a brick. The frosting is nothing but sugary overload, cloyingly sweet to the point that you won’t taste any of the actual flavors. There is zero finesse to this cake, it was inedible after a few bites. It’s shocking that they can charge $282 for this and can’t even get the basics right. You can get a better cake at your local supermarket bakery section, or from a Betty Crocker dry cake mix.

Smallcakes Ahwatukee is a great shop!! I make a purchase each time i visit the Phoenix area (about 4 times a year). I am always greeted and served within a timely manner. The employees are great at making me feel welcome and keeping a conversation. The environment of this shop is always nicely kept and the cupcakes always taste amazing. They even keep great on a 2 hour drive!

Let me say I'm willing to pay top dollar for a nice-sized, great-tasting cupcake, but the cupcakes at small cakes does not fit into either category. The cupcakes that I purchased for my wife and I were super dry. The texture almost felt day old, but I can't say that for certain. I could've gotten a moist and better tasting cupcake at Sam's Club. I'm very disappointed.
