I am from Chicago so I know all too well that the hole-in-the-wall joints are the true gems of any city and Southern Fried is just that. I had the catfish and spaghetti, burgers and hotlink and all of my guest were satisfied with their meal. The portions for the price are just right. The seasoning on the fish was superb! DO NOT LET THE COLOR OF THE SPAGHETTI FOOL YOU it was fantastic. Great customer service with an at-home feel. If you are looking for a Southern taste in your mouth look no further

Southern Fried – A Mixed Experience in Phoenix’s Soul Food Scene
Finding a quality soul food restaurant or a renowned fried chicken spot in Phoenix can be quite the challenge, so I approached my visit to Southern Fried with cautious optimism. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon, eager to explore a place I had yet to experience.
Upon arrival, I was struck by the lack of curb appeal; the restaurant is small and somewhat unassuming. I recommend placing your order ahead of time and opting for takeout, as the interior was uncomfortably warm, likely in the 90s. Within minutes of stepping inside, I started to feel the heat. Although there was an electric fan present, it seemed oddly positioned away from the seating area, which did little to alleviate the discomfort. I was greeted warmly by one of the owners, who kindly took my order.
My selection included:
- Two fried pork chops with a side of collard greens and rice with gravy.
- Two pieces of dark meat chicken accompanied by collard greens and candied yams, with an additional side of fried shrimp.
Unfortunately, the fried pork chops were disappointing. They were dry and overcooked, rendering them almost inedible. On a more positive note, the collard greens were flavorful, boasting just the right amount of savory juice. However, the rice and gravy fell flat, lacking the depth of flavor one would hope for in a soul food staple.
The fried chicken, while perfectly cooked, was limited to wings only, which diminished its versatility. The candied yams were delightful, striking a good balance in texture without being overly chunky, though a touch more sweetness would elevate them further.
Overall, my experience at Southern Fried was a mixed bag. While there were some highlights, such as the collard greens and candied yams, the shortcomings in the pork chops and the lack of variety in the chicken offerings left me underwhelmed. Based on this visit, I find it hard to justify a return trip.

Came my first time and it will be my last. I hate to leave a critical review but I am a foodie and enjoy food from all over the world. I ordered take out for a number 1 combo. The food was not worth a 35 minute wait. The reviews are not accurate. I was hoping for more of a southern flavor but the batter was bland and there was really nothing special going on taste wise. I recommend Louisiana fried chicken for your southern Cajun style cravings.

Place is too hot, no A/C.
Food taste like gas station chicken. Chicken has a fish after taste.

Pretty sure the fryer wasn't on before I walked in (at 11:30; they open at 11:00). I was the only customer, and it took near a half hour for my order of a 2-piece catfish and fries, so I'm assuming the cook was waiting for the fryer to heat up. Probably didn't wait long enough because the catfish was soggy and undercooked. Fries were just soggy, unseasoned shoestrings. Old, run-down building that's not very clean. I ate the fries and threw the rest out. I have no idea how there are so many 5-star reviews. It was a total waste of money.

The food was good. I ordered the lemon pepper chicken strips and fries. It was fried and seasoned perfectly, good flavor and juicy. Customer service was not good at all. We walked in and the girl taking orders just stared at us like "hurry up", I'm the one who greeted her and it seemed like she didn't appreciate that. When we asked about drinks because they were not on the menu, she said they had Koolaid and then pointed to 3 fountain dispensers that had probably a shot of each left in them lol. The AC was out so it was HOT in there also. She didn't mention any specials which we saw on a board later as we were walking out after already ordering. If we ever go back, id probably call it in and go pick up. Big if tho.

Food was tasteless. The greens, cabbage, and supposed to be whiting fish, flavorless.. I thought marijuana is legal to smoke in your home, not outside a restaurant. People walking in from the street and going to the kitchen. NEVER AGAIN. Sorry I had to write this, but the truth is the truth.

Ate here a little over a year ago but could not leave a comment. It was late and raining out and I wanted fried chicken bad and was tired of my usual spots. Found this place on google and tired it out. Bought a 10 piece wing diner and the wings were bigger than my hands. If that wasn’t weird enough the seasoning was lacking. I pick over one and gave the rest to a homeless man sitting on the bus bench under a tarp. The man cooking was nice enough.
