One of only 2 placed I know to get good real southern food. I came from New Orleans and since being back in AZ I have only found 2 places that are good and make real southern food.

My first time here and I got the southern fried chicken and double rice with gravy. The rice portion was smaller than I expected and the chicken was a bit bland. The restaurant at the time was short staffed and the cook happened to be my server. I left a tip because it seems he was working hard doing everything on his own. I'll be coming back sometime to try something else.

Jambalaya was delicious. Portion just right and cornbread sweet but not too sweet. Worth checking out.

Delicious Millionaire Mac n Cheese! Loved the blackened catfish and collard greens too. Good music and art on the walls.

The owner is super sweet but wasn’t wowed by the food it was just okay. I definitely would never come back. I love soul food just didn’t blow me away. Tables were sticky and dirty, advertise on the menu certain drinks which they did not have, served tap water, Mac n cheese was terrible along with rice and gravy no flavor. I really want to see the owner flourish and his business take off but if that is going to happen he has to get it together.

I really like this spot. My daughter recommended this place. I will definitely be back. The food was awesome. I had my favorite Catfish and Shrimp, cabbage and yams. They have a Happy Hour all summer long. What more can you ask for?!

My love for macaroni and cheese knows no bounds so when I stumbled across the "Millionaire Mac n Cheese" I was intrigued, to put it lightly. The restaurant is located in a fairly busy shopping complex. This is a newish restaurant and there looked to be a plastic banner with the restaurant name out front. It wasn't hard to find, but it could be easy to miss if you aren't paying attention. The restaurant itself stuck me as more of a "mom n pop" which is my favorite! I was greeted and assisted immediately. From the time that I placed my order (which was only Mac n cheese) to the time I paid for my food and left, it maybe took 2 minutes max. I really appreciated that my take out container was wrapped in aluminum to keep it nice and toasty, not that it's needed in the AZ summer lol. When I took the cover off my entire kitchen was flooded with this intensely delicious smell, it was intoxicating! This was a very unique Mac n cheese with its own blend of spices and (I think) sour cream. It was delicious but was over entirely way too soon which brings me to my one and only complaint-portion size. The side of Mac n cheese was not very large and cost ~$7 which is pretty pricey. Out of curiosity, I measured the container and it was ~8oz. Considering the cup wasn't totally full, there was probably 7oz in the container and I'm sure you can do the math from there. Overall, I can see myself coming back to try out the full menu despite the high cost for smaller portions.

Super, super tasty. The rock fish was beautifully and lightly breaded, cooked to a moist, flaky goodness. The red beans and rice were flavorful and not soupy. The hush puppies are firm and toasty. The catfish is clearly fresh and seasoned expertly. Real sweet tea. And an onsite, enthusiast, friendly owner. A real find of a restaurant.

The food was definitely good and our server was really good. However, a lot of the items on the menu were not available to order. I took my mom here for her birthday and they didnt have what she wanted.

Probably the worst dining experience in the last couple of years. Nothing about the meal was good. We got there at 6:15 and got our food at 7:30. This is with only 6 other people in the restaurant. There was 4 people in our party. Major items were not available. Three of us had chicken that was reheated and dried out. The sides were cold and inedible. The place was not clean and the interior was the same decor of the previous restaurant in this location. There is no way this restaurant will survive. Could not recommend this place to anyone. We were there on 7/25/19

Don't go there to see if as good as his grandma's. Not fair cuz she taught everyone in the valley what soul food is. Based on it's own merits, catfish was crunchy, flakey and moist. Fried chicken was crunchy, moist, and flavorful. Hot link had just enough of a kick to say 'HEY'. Millionaires mac n cheese was baddass! Rad beans and rice and rice and gravy were OK. Sweet Tea was good. Will go back to try the jambalaya!!?

As first impressions go, Root and Soul was.... Disgusting. We switched tables three times, because both the tables, floors and menus were all sticky. I've posted a photo of a food stained menu. As for the food, The Root and Soul was both good and yes, also disgusting. My fish was flaky and had a nice taste, see photos. I liked it a lot. But my daughter's chicken wasn't cooked and had pink blood oozing out. We had such high expectations, given all of the older positive reviews from many of my Yelp friends. I wish the owners good luck, but you cannot open your doors and tell customers at 5:30 on a Friday night that your out of Chicken Fried Steak, Hush Puppies, Pork Chops, Corn Bread; I could go on, but.... why?
