I recently tried Yen Sushi in Scottsdale after seeing its 4.9 rating on Google, so I went in with pretty high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t quite match the reviews.
The restaurant itself looks fine and has a casual, local vibe. However, the food was underwhelming. I ordered tobiko over rice (caviar-style fish roe), and it was served extremely cold — almost like it had just come straight out of the fridge. The texture felt more like crunchy ice chips than fresh tobiko, which was disappointing. Overall, the quality felt comparable to grocery store sushi, and honestly, I’ve had better from places like Whole Foods.
Service was also lacking. When I asked about the sake sizes, I was told “large or small,” and when I asked for clarification on the size, the response was simply “it looks like this,” rather than giving an actual measurement or description. It didn’t feel very attentive or well-trained. There were also noticeable distractions — dishes being dropped and a fair amount of noise while guests were waiting for items from the conveyor belt.
It does seem like a neighborhood spot with regulars who enjoy coming here, so maybe I caught them on an off day. But based on my experience, it didn’t live up to the nearly perfect rating. For me, it was closer to a 2.5–3 star experience.

Extraordinary sushi for such an affordable price! Would totally recommend to anyone who loves sushi! The experience is awesome especially with the fast and pleasant service! 5 stars!

We were greeted with great hospitality and management did an outstanding job taking care of issues with our order. The sushi and desserts are delicious and all staff provides an individualized and personalized touch for all customers. I highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion. We have celebrated my son's birthday here. Whether celebrating or going for casual dining, we have really enjoyed this restaurant.

Pretty cool experience. Great food and a great gimmick with a conveyor belt for sushi. Surprisingly everything was fresh and tasty and the service was spot on. If we are ever in this area again, we definitely will come back here.
The marinated salmon is to die for.

Our go-to spot. Prices are great and quality is even better. Second time ordering from here this week lol. We frequent here and highly recommend!

The server was so nice! Really good rolls! We tried a few made to order rolls and a couple off the conveyor and they were all very good, as was the miso soup. Clean and it was busy!
