What a great addition to Tubac! Located in the former site of El Barrio Kitchen, which lasted about as long as a head of cabbage, Sonora Mia has great food, nice portions, good prices, and a very friendly vibe. There are a lot of eating options in the village, but if you’re looking for something fast, local, fresh, and quick, give Sonora Mia a try!

Found this gem on our first visit to Tubac and would go back just to eat here again. My chimichanga was light and crispy outside, stuffed with aromatic carne asada and accompanied by fresh tomato, cucumber, lettuce. My partner's tostadas with shredded pork were equally fresh and delicious. We sat outside in the relaxing patio, sipped our fresh fruit drinks (mine mango, hers lime), and couldn't have asked for a better lunch in Tubac.

I have lived in Tucson 50 years, I get to Tubac as often as possible, I have to say, I have never eaten there and left feeling exhilarated about the cuisine. Some better than others. However, last Saturday I was in Tubac for fun and shopping, per usual I had to eat. Only by chance of another shopper at Jane's attic, telling me about Sonora Mia when I asked the store clerk for suggestions, I did make my way to the most exquisite, authentic, memories of decades past, Mexican cuisine. The shrimp tostada was superb, flan, beyond excellent, but the enchilada sauce is simply Devine. I haven't seen that color, consistency or flavor for so long, and I do eat in South Tucson, Danielle, owner, your enchilada sauce is loved by me. I will be a loyal customer. Sheila. You could package and sell anything you serve. See you again soon.

After seeing the reviews from other posts I decided to try this place. It was a quiet day. It was just us and another couple at a different table sometime between lunch and dinner time.

We got two plates. One was a 3 taco plate, beans and rice on the side and the other was sopes with a green sauce. It was positive and negative.

The tacos were ok, meat (carne asada) was a bit dry/bland. Even with all the cabbage, pico, queso and a squirt of line it was just ok. The meat lacked flavor. The meat almost disappeared as all the other garnishes overpowered the underflavored meat. Had the meat been a bit more seasoned and juicer those tacos would have been great. I hate to say the same went for the rice and beans. Rice was a bit dry and the beans were just ok.

Now sopes dish was another story! Minus the rice and beans (rice a bit too dry) it was great. This meat was juicy, flavorful, tender and the green sauce was a great compliment to the meat. Each bite was great with the flavors well balanced. The texture of the sope itself was very good. It held up well to the full load of deliciousness on top. It stayed an almost moist crunchy but not soggy.

For dessert we had the churros. I specifically asked if they were made in house. I was told yes. Now maybe it was but when we sank our teeth into it they were a bit on the harder side and way too chewy. I'm sorry to say it did not feel either fresh or made in house.

I'm on the fence if I should go back and try something different. The sopes yes but he tacos, rice and beans were a bit disappointing.

Parking: Parking is free, just not very convenient. We walked a few minutes not able to find the place. Almost seemed hidden. Initially it looked closed until I tried to open the door at which time I realized it was open.

Liked it ...Will Go Back!
.
- My wife and I have had a late breakfast here three times over the past two weeks. Food was very good. People were friendly. I will continue going here.
- Today, We had the daily special which was tacos made the old fashioned way: fold a soft corn tortilla around meat, and then fry them. They were really good.
- We’ve had the carne asada fries: very interesting and very good. Pancake breakfast: very good. Chilaquiles: excellent! (I have never liked chilaquiles until stealing some of Sonoramia’s version from my wife’s plate.)
- To properly align your expectations …this is a small place, sorta like a neighborhood café in Mexico. There are six indoor tables, plus more on the patio. When I was here, orders were placed at the counter and then delivered to the table. Food cooked from fresh ingredients, as opposed to (what I call) prefab Sysco rip-the-bag-and-fry food.
(I apologize for the quality of the photos; they were taken - not as review photos - but for the purpose of sharing with friends.)
- One final thought: The locals are eating here …

I was really looking forward to a new Mexican restaurant. The chicken enchiladas seemed fresh, but lacked any sauce and any seasoning. The salsa had no flavor at all. Beverages are in a soda machine or in the refrigerator. How about a great homemade salsa and some prickly pear homemade tea?

Parking: Easy parking in front of the restaurant.
