Road Trip Series, Part 38 Greasy Spoon Series, Part 1 Road trips aren’t for everyone. I get that. Personally I love them and one of the reasons is planning where to spend the night when you’ve just had enough driving for one day. That place is neither home nor your desired destination. It’s the in-between. The there, but not “there” yet. During our Flagstaff road trip we spent a day in Phoenix, which meant that getting home that night would likely stretch us beyond our safest limits, so we planned a layover before completing the rest of the drive home the following day. It was while arriving at our hotel in Yuma, Arizona, that we noticed a 24-hour diner within walking distance. Oh, yeah. Our agenda for the next morning just became clear: experience “Penny’s Diner.” From the exterior it appeared to be the quintessential “greasy spoon.” Sadly, such places are often overlooked and under appreciated, but I find the charm of an inexpensive diner undeniable. Hold the pretense and just hit me with some comfort food and a side of friendly service! The first things you’ll notice when you enter Penny’s are the carefully curated 50’s music playing, the associated time period memorabilia, and the sizzling of the grill. Ah, ambiance! Inspired by this experience I’ve decided that if I ever run for city council my campaign platform will include a resolution that all “greasy spoons” located within city limits be required to serve hash browns with every meal. Order of eggs? Your side of hash browns are part of the package. How about oatmeal, a bran muffin, or bowl of cereal? Yep, they all come with a crispy friend. I may need a little help squeezing my campaign slogan onto the yard signs though. “Hash browns with every meal. That’s not just common sense…it’s the law!” 😉 And that’s…Henry’s Take. #greasyspoon #henry4citycouncil

It tasted very good. The Brownie Blitz was a very good dessert.

The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. A huge “thank you” to the staff on shift 10-05-25 around 315pm. Your kindness towards me and my 3 babies was much needed. Thank you for making us feel better and sending us back to Glendale with full happy tummies.

Decent breakfast spot, if you are ever tired of the major restaurants...kind fast as well.

Came here to give it a try. Place was gross, ordered fried mushrooms and there was hair in it. Told the waitress and she got all uppity because of it. Then I physically watched one of the cooks (I think they called him Paco) literally grab the raw bacon and chicken with the and glove, and then proceed to touch the register and the rest of the cooked food all without changing the glove. Brought it up to their attention and the waitress got all pissy and the cook tried to argue saying he changed his glove. I would give zero stars if I could. I definitely do not recommend this place. Health department would have a field day with this establishment.

We often stop here when in Yuma. Good standard breakfast fare, good service & prices are OK ( as almost anywhere is expensive nowadays). We had pancakes, eggs, biscuits, etc. Satisfied ourselves before hitting the road.

This place is cute on the outside but it is like a Waffle House. Coffee is not good. Seems like the cook only cooks one thing at a time. We sat at the bar and saw all food sitting on the cooks side table with no heat waiting for bacon to finish cooking. Very disappointing.

Classic bacon and egg breakfast was perfect at this 40s - 50s themed Diner. Service was quick. Prices are very reasonable.

Original old time dinner flavor and appeal
You can tell the chef had lots of years turning out great food at record speed. Must have been a submarine cook lol
If their busy, check if counter space is open an the be a kid again!

Food is delicious. Portions are generous. Cooks will make some wise cracks. Everybody hustles. Place is clean…but a little greasy…like it should be.

Went to penny’s dinner for some milkshakes. The milkshakes were great but the waitress was kinda rude i believe she had a orange apron on. She made us feel like an inconvenience being there and having to serve us. Ruined the experience for my friends and I.
