Absolutely a hidden gem! Don’t be fooled by its cover, the food here truly stands out in the area. My husband and I come often, and every dish is freshly cooked, sizzling hot, and full of flavor. My husband loves dishes made with organ meats, and they’re always cleaned perfectly and taste amazing. The owner is incredibly warm and attentive. Sometimes they get super busy because it’s that popular, but it never takes away from how delicious the food is!

Jia Wei is such a hidden gem in Burnaby! A true mom-and-pop restaurant that makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in. Their dumplings are absolutely delicious, some of the best I’ve had, packed with flavor and so fresh. The service is warm and comforting, you can really feel the care they put into everything.

Highly recommend this spot if you’re craving authentic, homemade food. It’s so good — a place you’ll definitely want to come back to again and again!

The sweet and sour pork here is amazing, crispy and full of flavor. It's worth the wait. The dumplings are also excellent, with thin skins and generous feelings, just like my mom made for me in my childhood. Definitely some of the best comfort food I've had in Vancouver.

I had a terrible experience at this restaurant last Sunday.
When I came on a weekday morning, a female staff member was very kind and provided excellent service, but compared to that, my visit at around 7:30 AM last Sunday was extremely disappointing.

First, while two staff members gave glass bowls and regular tableware to other Chinese customers, they gave us disposable utensils and plates for no reason.

Second, we ordered two bowls of rice, but unlike last time, they served them in tiny bowls, which didn’t seem worth the money at all. The Mapo tofu was the same. It was either that the restaurant had already lost its original spirit in such a short time or that the staff, who looked new, made a mistake.

Third, unlike other tables who received water in glass cups that were refilled whenever empty, we were only given paper cups and no one checked on us throughout the meal.

I was truly disappointed. The food itself was excellent — the Guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) we tried for the first time was also delicious — but the service was messy, and it felt like we were treated differently from Chinese customers.

주말 저녁 말고 평일 점심에 가세요 중국인 아니라고 차별합니다. 음식은 진짜 맛있는데 서비스 때문에 최애식당 잃는 게 속상할 따름이네요

I came to Jia Wei with a friend, and we both had a wonderful experience. We ordered Spicy Shrimp, Sweet & Sour Pork (Guo Bao Rou), Stir-fried Cabbage, Dumplings, and Chive Pockets — every dish was excellent. The spicy shrimp was flavorful without being overpowering, the sweet & sour pork was crispy outside and tender inside, the cabbage was fresh and crunchy, and the dumplings and chive pockets tasted homemade and authentic.

The Sweet & Sour Pork (Guo Bao Rou) was served last, and the owner explained it takes more time because each slice of pork is freshly battered and fried. That extra care was easy to taste. None of the dishes felt pre-made — everything came with wok hei (the special smoky “breath of the wok”), and you can really tell the food is cooked to order.

I am from Northern China and my friend is from Shanghai, and we both found the flavors very satisfying — truly authentic Chinese taste, but also well-balanced for local preferences. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the service was warm and attentive.

This restaurant made me feel at home and gave me a sense of comfort. No wonder so many people come here by word of mouth. Highly recommended!

I ordered a tomato-and-egg rice dish over the phone, but two minutes later I decided to cancel and called them back. They told me it was already cooked and packaged, which I found hard to believe. When I placed the order, they’d said it would take 15 minutes because there were three dishes ahead of mine. Yet when I picked it up, it tasted pre-made — like they’d just reheated it in the microwave and put it in a container. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to cancel after only two minutes, and on top of that, they ended up giving me something pre-made (called 预制菜 in Chinese).

I’m originally from Northern China and came to Canada in 2012 for high school. I still remember the first time I ate at this restaurant back in 2013—it truly felt like a taste of home. The food was authentic and affordable, and the owner was incredibly warm and welcoming. I used to come here often.
But in 2015, one day I went as usual and was surprised—and saddened—to find the restaurant had closed. It felt like I had lost a little piece of home.

Now, in 2025, a friend suggested we go try a Northeastern Chinese restaurant. As soon as I walked in, I felt the owner looked so familiar. Then it suddenly hit me—this was the same restaurant from ten years ago! I was overwhelmed with emotion as all those memories from high school came rushing back.

To my delight, the food is still just as delicious as it was back then. That same authentic taste brought back so many warm memories of old friends and simpler times.

I highly recommend this place. The food is amazing, the prices are reasonable, and most importantly—it tastes like home.

The food here is excellent! The portion size is just right—enough to feel satisfied without being overwhelming. The flavors are fresh and well-balanced, and the dishes are not too greasy, which makes the meal very enjoyable. The service was friendly and the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. Definitely a place I’d recommend to anyone looking for delicious food and a pleasant dining experience.

I ordered two dishes online. They only delivered one. There was no notice or give me any choice to change my order. It was a very bad experience. Be careful if you order online. They may cancel your order without informing you about it.
