Interac took time to process so I had to go and withdraw from an atm which charged me 6 dollars to pay for a cake worth 25 dollars. Only to get the etransfer processed when I’ve already drove off, I called them if they can interac it back to me but they said they cant do it so I had to get back to their store the next day to get the refund. Their cakes are not worth the hassle of paying cash. I will never buy from them. I think if you sell in a mall you gotta be able to at least accept card payments.

Details of Concern
I purchased a coffee cake from Maxim’s Bakery at Metropolis at Metrotown. The cake had a strong unpleasant smell, as if it was old or spoiled. After eating a small portion, I developed itching on my legs, which made me concerned about food safety and product freshness.
When I called the bakery to ask about the freshness ….
UPDATE AFTER A DAY
I reached out to Maxim’s Bakery yesterday regarding the issue I had with the cake, and I’m glad to share that they responded early this morning. I returned the cake, and they kindly provided me a gift card for the full amount of cake so I can purchase another one when I’m ready. The staff at the store were very polite and helpful throughout the process. I truly appreciate their prompt response and excellent customer service. I’m happy with the outcome!

Actually every lady working there is wayyy too rude, she’s one of the kind. I had a terrible experience at this bakery. The customer service was absolutely horrible — the staff were rude, unhelpful, and acted like serving customers was a burden. When I asked a simple question about one of the pastries, I was ignored and then given a sarcastic answer. The cashier didn’t even bother to greet or thank me. The atmosphere felt tense and unwelcoming, and I honestly lost my appetite after how I was treated. Definitely not worth the visit — I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

The pastries here are good but the customer service is horrible. They only accept cash or etransfer because they couldn't pay for the credit card charges. I ordered and paid in etransfer and as many of you know, sometimes etransfers aren't immediate. The staff accused me of trying to dupe them by stealing $11 worth of pastries. They held me and my pregnant wife for 20 minutes until they receive the etransfer. Not going to this place anymore. St Germain is upstairs it's worth going there instead.

Bad attitude from server.
Their cake are amazing but the problem is that they only take cash . No credit cards or debit cards cards . Some of the cakes are over priced but definitely taste good

cash only, and the server had an extremely bad attitude
The server had an extremely, extremely bad attitude—I’ve never encountered such terrible service before. Since I don’t come here often, I simply asked how to pay, and she very rudely replied “cash only” with a lot of impatience. I just wanted to confirm and asked if debit card was accepted, and she rolled her eyes, rudely and loudly shouting “cash only.”
I told her that if card is not accepted, she could just say yes or no—instead of being so disrespectful. When I handed her the cash, she rolled her eyes again and even held it up to the light to check if it was counterfeit. I’ve never seen such rude behavior. When giving back the change, she even cursed at me in Cantonese.
I’ll never come back to this disgusting bakery. Everyone, avoid this place.
(Also, the cream in their cream bun is clearly non-dairy vegetable cream—it tastes terrible.)
Finally a place that does traditional Hong Kong cream horns and Napoleon with no sponge filling.
Maxim’s Bakery in Metrotown is a true gem for Hong Kong-style cakes and bread. Their no-egg fruit cake is a standout—moist, flavorful, and perfect for those with dietary preferences. The bakery offers a wide selection of fresh, delicious treats that capture authentic flavors. The staff are exceptionally friendly, providing warm and attentive service that enhances the overall experience. Whether you’re craving classic pastries or unique offerings, Maxim’s delivers quality and taste. A must-visit spot for anyone who loves traditional baked goods done right!
Cash only is a joke
