We have had several excellent experiences at JOey Coquitlam over the years. It has been one of our favourite places for celebrations and special evenings, which makes writing this review especially disappointing. We genuinely care about this establishment and do not want to see its standards decline.
At the very beginning of our meal, when our server Priya brought the starter, before we had even received our main dishes, she informed us that she wanted to finish her shift and go home and therefore we needed to settle the bill immediately.
However, we continued to see her actively working throughout the entire duration of our visit, until we had completed our meal, which made the request even more difficult to understand.
When I asked to speak with a manager, we spoke with Kaia Jackson, the Night Manager. We were initially told that this was “policy.” However, when we asked whether it is truly policy to request payment at the beginning of a meal simply because a server’s shift is ending, the explanation became unclear.
From a guest’s perspective, a staff member’s shift timing should never become the responsibility of the customer. More importantly, being asked to pay upfront in this context creates the impression that guests are being viewed as potential non-payers. That feeling alone significantly impacted our experience.
Unfortunately, this single interaction overshadowed all of the positive experiences we have had here before. We have consistently supported this establishment, recommended it to others, and celebrated important occasions here. That is why this experience was particularly disappointing.
We respectfully ask that Charlotte Marshall, General Manager, or someone in senior leadership review this situation carefully and take appropriate action. Whether that involves clarifying internal policies, retraining staff, or reinforcing service standards, it is important that guests are never placed in this position again.
We value this establishment and want to continue supporting it. However, maintaining a high standard of hospitality requires leadership to address issues like this directly. We hope this feedback is taken seriously and used constructively to ensure this does not happen again.

Parker served our birthday dinner last night and was absolutely delightful and made our experience 10/10! She made sure the entire night, although she appeared to be very busy, that we were taken care of. She even got us birthday deserts to share with everyone at the table! Thank you Joey’s for being such a good spot, and thank you Parker for being so generous!
