Briskets were pretty dry
I rarely leave anything less than a 5 star (often don’t review at all) as I appreciate the challenge of the food service industry. I guess I hope that management sees this review as a call to be better. My experience at hog shack as far as service goes was great. That being said, I was very disappointed by the food. The food was not fresh, it was lukewarm and had a reheated vibe to it. I may have been able to overlook the quality if they gave more food but the portions themselves were not great either, and the icing on the cake was the price. Having small quantities of mediocre food for an expensive price just does not cut it. This was consensus among the 10 or so folk that were with me. I hope this place puts more effort into the quality so future customers have a better experience.

Took some guests from out of town here for lunch and my goodness what an impression this place left on us. The food was amazing, the drinks were epic and the dessert was the perfect cherry on top. Will be back to try more items on the menu. Highly recommend.

We ordered the Mammoth platter and garlic shrimp. The shrimp was really good, and the platter was enjoyable but it was served to us cold. We were a little disappointed.

Service took about 45 minutes. We ordered the mammoth plate. We had a table for 4. 3 chicken legs were served, 3 corn rolls were served. I didn't understand the portions but it was recommended for 4+. Thought it was silly we had to share those but portions were not set in writing so it is what it is.. Meat was dry. The best was the susuage which we got only one.

Smokehouse platter- brisket, pulled pork, cheesey corn, yam fries and dark lager. The brisket was a little dry and salty but improved with the self applied BBQ sauce. The pulled pork was very nicely spiced and moist. Can't go wrong with cheesey corn and yam fries are always a treat. Nice selection of draught beer at an OK price. The platter was a little pricey but ample servings. Friendly service too.

Some of the best brisket I’ve ever eaten. Pulled pork was good but a bit sweet. Baked beans also very sweet. Drinks were excellent. Server was excellent.

Not quite sure what to make of this place-been a few times- the brisket is hit and miss- usually on the drier leaner side. The so called Dino ribs are a bit of a joke. Was there last night- the one rib in particular was mostly all bone- hardly any meat on it at all. How does a kitchen put out food like that ? total lack of pride in their offerings. Lacks the small touches that make such a difference- always have to ask for more napkins, why no finger bowls when serving ribs etc - put some toothpicks on the tables-
The fries and rice are good-but you'd think they would have mastered at least the brisket by now. And I'm not sure I believe them when they say the meat is smoked in house- no BBQ smell at all on entering.

I ordered the smoked brisket and crispy Brussels sprouts and some pop. The food was unedible. So bad I had to toss most of it. I ordered delivery. Only positive thing I can say was my order was prepared relatively quickly.
Portions are small.
The sauce on the brisket was tough and extremely sour and unpleasant. The Brussels sprouts were soggy, and covered in sauce that also was sour, possible same sauce as brisket. Never before have I tasted so horrible a bacon - didn’t know you can ruin bacon! The pop was packed next to hot food so was very sweaty and warm.

Get the gumbo when it's as the special of the day. And add pulled pork, and sour cream to it.

As lifetime Steveston residents, we kind of forgot about the hog shack……. We haven’t been there in a few years for no particular reason. We had always had good experiences.
We went in tonight and we Are thrilled we did so! We will be back regularly. The food was absolutely fantastic. Tatiana Was our server and she was lovely and attentive. The atmosphere was great. They have all day happy hour Monday through Thursday with fantastic prices. Huge portions! I will also be leaving a review on Richmond Rants and raves on Facebook as this place definitely needs more advertising! It should be one of Steveston‘s busiest restaurants. Thank you again for a lovely experience & amazing food that didn’t break the bank.
