It's good (3 stars) but not what the other reviews made it out to be (4 to 5 stars)

Misnomer. It's not a snack. There's no resemblance of anything like an appetizer, a foretasting, nor a hors d'oeuvre. It's not a 小食 nor a 小吃 It's a ä½ å€‹è€æ¯ ! Well, maybe not quite, but it certainly is the mother of all snacks. I mean look at the pictures! You think those are light bites? The owner must be delusional. Oh wait,... å å£«å». That's the name of the place in Canto. Pretty damn clever, even in his name. ä½ å’å»å’©!! Yes, the portions are quite large for a snack. It's obviously not a snack but a meal in itself. That last meal, it nearly killed me. At the food court table, not at the poker table at Casino Royale. That is not hyperbole, but the food is compared to the name. If you're 叻 enough, you should give this place a try. Especially if you like crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl. Maybe the 叻ness will rub off on you.

The best claypot rice I've had in Canada, and at a very fair price. James Snacks is in a small food court, which is way less busy than Aberdeen, but has some very popular stalls! The popular toppings are the spare ribs ($11 tax incl) and free range chicken ($12), so we had to try them. There is a 20 min wait so that the entire pot comes out fresh, piping hot (tongue scalding hot). The proteins were incredibly tender and flavourful. The chicken was silky smooth, but I don't like a chopped up drumstick because there are many little bones. Mushrooms were good. We both wished there was some lapcheung added as a bonus...but we can continue to dream. The rice was amazing. All around you got that really cripsy rice (fan jiu) layer which is indicative of direct heat on the bottom. Comes with hot tea as well. We made the mistake of not knowing there was tea included and ordering milk tea from the stall right across and it was not very good. *Cash only.

We found Food Shanghai Ting by accident, as we parked in the lot of the shopping center that Food Shanghai Ting is located in. After walking through the shopping center we saw that Food Shanghai Ting was the only eatery that was open in the food court on a Saturday afternoon, and it had a large menu, including the two items my boyfriend was craving: wonton soup and soup dumplings. Staff was very nice and were eager to help us, pointing at different menu items, to clarify which we wanted to order. There are pictures of all the menu items on the wall, which was helpful. Just note that this is a cash-only joint. I didn't have any of the wonton soup, but my boyfriend did enjoy it. However, I thought the XLB dumplings were simply, A-OK. I think the biggest disappointment was that some of the dumplings already had holes, so the soup spilled out, which is always the best part of a soup dumpling! Of the dumplings that were intact, I found that there was not nearly enough soup within. Pork was better though; they were tasty and a good portion. It's cool though that you can get soup dumplings at a food court, with the bamboo steaming baskets!

Run by two old Shanghainese couples. It’s very reasonably priced. Not the best but good choice for quick pork juicy steamed buns for a cheaper price they tastes pretty good. Good Shanghai food with reasonable prices in Richmond. Can’t compare to Jin Jiang Shanghai restaurant in Burnaby that costs more but has THE BEST juicy steamed pork buns in 604 so far I tried!!! Jin Jiang in fact is the best Shanghai restaurant compared to dynasty, Yuan as well as Top Shanghai in Richmond!! Yuan is the worst. If you want real Shanghai restaurant you must travel to burnabyJin Jiang and make sure you make reservations as it packed all the time!!! Shanghai Ting is a cheaper quick alternative in Richmond with good food but not best food.

Nestled in a strip mall, James snacks for sure gets a bang for your buck! Food: so far we've tried free range chicken ( lots of bones but otherwise great) , spareribs with black bean sauce ( sooooooooo good) and boneless chicken! Tip: 20 mins wait to make the dishes, if you are planning on coming by call beforehand and preorder . They do take out with the ceramic pot but there is a deposit you need to pay for them. They give you a ticket when you bring back the pot and ticket and your deposit is returned to you Overall hearty home made food ! It's so big there's enough for dinner and lunch the next day !

Husband and wife team in an antiquated mall serving up a uniquely Cantonese fare, the claypot rice. It's authentically prepared, no microwaving involved, hence the minimum 20-minute cooking time. Tip: use the accompanied tea to soak and scrape loose the remaing rice at the bottom of the pot to finish your meal.

Yummy Claypot rice... the best and with crispy rice on the bottom and side of the pot. Very flavourful.

I ventured all the way out to James Snacks after being disappointed by R+H dumplings that ran out of XLB by 5pm! I opted for this mom-n-pop hole in the wall. I was not disappointed. I called ahead and ordered the black bean sparerib claypot rice. Upon arrival, it took an additional 15 minutes for it come out, but it was worth it. The spare ribs were savoury, soft and fall off the bone tender. The rice could have been better. It was very crispy on the bottom, and I was concerned that the plastic spoon just wouldn't be able to scrape the bits, however there were a few soft spots on the bottom, so it ended up working out with some chopstick hacking. Soy sauce and siracha on the side, and you are good to go! $9 tax included. Great deal for a simple, hearty, dinner!

This place is cheap and it is as hole in the wall, however, it is often the hole in the wall places that tend to have the best food. I was tipped off about this place the last time I was in Richmond. I had the black bean and chicken dish. Filling with appropriate flavors and economic. Good customer service.

Very delicious foods and the price is very cheap. Can't find any other shanghai cuisine with this price in Richmond.

We made sure to call ahead and got the chicken claypot and pork rib with black bean sauce C preferred the black bean because it was more flavorful, but I liked that they used free range chicken and u can taste it in the texture. I loved the crispy rice at then end. We didn't eat all the rice and left still a bit hungry. I wish they threw in more meat. Still good though!
