If you order the chicken karaage, be prepared for the clarity on life it will provide you. The second I took a bite of it, I instantly called all my relatives and invited them to my bar mitzvah next week.
Unfortunately, I did not feel the same way about the beef yakiudon. There was so much sauce in this dish, that I instantly ran home and drank 50 gallons of water. To this day, I am still drinking water to offset the damaged onto my body.

Living up in embassy rich Ottawa during the early 80s I had my choice of places to eat and new foods to try. My introduction to sushi came during this time - back when this was sitting at the sushi bar, talking with the chef, trying new combinations and stopping well past the point of full. On a business trip to Vancouver I had the urge late one evening and asked a likely local for a close sushi bar would be found - this before every street corner had two sushi shops like today. After passing a quiz (seriously) to see if I knew what sushi was I was led through alleys and back streets to a basement restaurant where I demographically stood apart. By far some of the best I had eaten to that point.
Fast forward 40 years, I now live out west and my diet has morphed to vegetarian over the years, but I still go for the seaweed wrapped tasty rice treats. There is much vegetarian sushi available and Aka Sushi delivers some of the best.
I've eaten sushi all over the Lower Mainland and down the coast to San Jose, but when in town I keep coming back to Aka. The host is such a friendly man, always with a tea pot to fill my cup and a smile of recognition when my family comes in.
From miso, to vegetable Tempura, to gyoza, to the classics like kappa maki, nothing fails to impress and make the family happy. New items (well, new since 1981 ....) such as avocado rolls and vegetarian caterpillars have rounded out the options for vegetarians nicely and we always fill up before we make it through the menu.
Aka Sushi is highly recommended - I have dined in many times, and ordered take out many more with every time (in or take-away) being wonderful. I will return many more times, and hope this encourages others to give it a try - you will not regret it.

Always great and fresh. Service is fantastic and the place is very clean. Prices are relatively on the cheaper side for sushi.

We love Aka Sushi and this is our only place we come to for Japanese food.
The quality of the food is excellent, the service is great and the staff are so friendly. The prices are a bit high but we don’t mind paying when we get consistent, excellent food.
Highly recommend

I can't comment on the inside of the restaurant because I ordered takeout. But the food was lack luster. I would have rated 3 stars, but the sashimi was just not good. The salmon was alright, but the tuna was not good at all. I didn't want to waste any food, so I tried to give it to my 2 cats, and neither one touched it. I tried to give it to my dogs, and 2/3 didn't eat it. My boyfriend didn't finish his meal, and the food ended up getting tossed. I ate what I ordered except for the tuna. I won't be back again. Reading other reviews, I saw that this place is under different management since the first Aka Sushi opened after Wired Monk. I had their sushi then and had no complaints, which is why I ordered here again after moving back into Cloverdale. It's a shame because we live close and both love sushi when we're having a lazy night and don't want to cook. But unfortunately I won't be back.
