Fish and Chips no more. Changing to another East Indian cuisine venue.
Picked up our order last night and we were not impressed. The fish was ok but the fries were all overcooked or almost burnt that it all tasted bitter. We also asked for condiments and utensils but it did not come with any. We expected more because it's pricey but I guess the staffs wouldn't care. It's our first time and will not come back again.
Stopped for quick lunch on Boxing Day with my Father, who used to go regularly to Al & Jan's many years ago. The original owners retired years ago, so we weren't sure what to expect.
It was unexpectedly quiet there for lunch, but probably because of Boxing Day. The lady was friendly and took our order for dine in and also cooked the food. We had 1 piece fish with chips each, and it arrived in a reasonable time very hot and fresh. The batter on the fish, while not the best we have was definitely good and crispy as was the fries. Overall a good lunch value we felt, and would certainly return if we are in this area again.
I went for all you can eat today the food was decent but not at all worth the price $20.95 I’ve been to c lovers and cockney kings fish and chips both of which are cheaper but much better quality and service quite a few bad things happened while I was there too like I was supposed to be able to have unlimited fountain drinks but the machine was apparently broken which he did not tell me until I asked him why he gave me a can he than proceeded to tell me I could only have one can also they never once checked in on me to see how my meal was or refill my water the table felt sticky and it says it’s all you can eat but it’s actually not it says in tiny printing on the menu that they have the right to limit you to 6 pieces of fish the fries taste decent but have horrible appearance they are bit black you can tell they not fresh if I wasn’t as hungry as I was I would of asked them to remake my fries and even after all this the dude has the balls to tell off my friend for having one singular small bite of my fish I seriously suggest for nobody to ever buy any food from them so they shut down and get replaced by a nice restaurant basically anything better than horrible would be an upgrade
25 dollars for a tiny piece of fish, not sure what is going on? But that’s a complete rip off! Better off going into Langley to get C-lovers you get 5x the amount for that price
Tuesdays , Wednesdays n Thursdays . 20.95 for six pieces of Fish and fries.
I can't see Al & Jan's lasting much longer. Since the namesakes no longer own the restaurant the upkeep of the dining room has fallen into complete disrepair. The chalkboard menu/art piece is gone from the wall and just the outline where it had been remains. The baseboards at the rear of the restaurant have likely disintegrated. It was hard to tell the restaurant was even open for how many burned out lights haven't been replaced. There were a few piles of dust/dirt that had been swept up but were awaiting a dust bin which never made an appearance while we were there.
Okay, enough about the physical appearance of the dining room. At least the kitchen area appeared clean and the young ladies working were friendly and their service was the same. The food itself was fine, served hot and tasted good.
Upon paying the ladies said not to tip using the machine as they don't receive any of it. Nor from the cash tip jar on the counter. This really is a sad state of affairs that I can't imagine the previous owners would want their name associated with.
I’ve been coming to this restaurant for years and have never had any issues with the portion sizes, especially given the price. However, this time I ordered the halibut dinner for $36 and was shocked at the size of the fish I received – it was the smallest portion I’ve seen. I called the restaurant to let them know, and while they said they weigh each piece before cooking, it’s hard to believe that, considering I have been coming to this restaurant for over 8 years.
What really made this worse was the customer service. When I went to pick up the order, I paid upfront but didn’t tip since I was just picking up. After the worker saw I hadn’t tipped, he said the word “gora” to his colleagues (thinking I would not understand) which I know is Punjabi word and can be used disrespectfully towards white customers. I found this both insulting and unprofessional. It seems like talking about customers behind their backs is more of a priority than actually serving them good food and treating them with respect.
PS my wife came here a separate day and was advised that the workers don’t receive any of the tip money and it all goes directly to the owner.
I ordered 4 of the lunch promo for to go, cod & fries. It was supposed to be with a tartar sauce per order. When we opened the package there was none! Very frustrating. There was no ketchup also for the fries. To the owners, please remind your staff to check everything before giving the orders to the customers especially if it's a take out! And they talked too loud when they were both talking to each other.

Jashan was our main waitress and cook for all you can eat today with Isha assisting. Jashan had an incredibly warm attitude and was very attentive.
The recent reviews did not give us confidence, so we shared our concern politely when we got seated. Jashan reassured that their fish and chips were not frozen or day olds and were made fresh.
Truly indeed, the fish and chips tasted fresh and not overly fried! Nice golden crisp and good portion. 6 pieces of fish is an amazing value and deal, plus chips and drinks refill!
We were satisfied with the quality of the food, and the friendly service made the experience even better. Thank you! :)

Pretty mediocre fish. I got the cod special even if it was cod was very rubbery. The fries were just ok. Regardless the portion was quite small.

Al & Jan's is my go to fish and chips spot and it's in my top 3 for best I've had in Canada. My mom and papa came from PEI and we took them there they liked it so much we went 2 nights in a row.. awesome food and friendly staff. I always enjoy myself and the food when I'm there
