We’ve been regulars at Amato Gelato Café in Vancouver — my 8-year-old daughter’s go-to treat after ballet classes, visiting once or twice a week. But after today, we won’t be coming back.
She asked to try two new flavours before deciding, and the staff told us we had to pay first before any tasting. That’s not just disappointing — it felt like they were implying we might ask for samples and not buy anything. We’ve never experienced a policy like this at any gelato shop — and we’ve been to many around the world.
Because of this, I only got her a one-scoop kid’s size, unsure if she’d like any other flavours besides cotton candy. Ironically, she loved the pineapple — we would’ve happily bought two scoops if they’d just let her try it first.
We’ve visited gelato and ice cream shops all over the world, and not a single one had a policy like this. Everywhere else, the experience is friendly and welcoming — samples are offered happily so you can actually enjoy choosing. But not here.
What a great place to get fresh Gelato at a great price. Come every week and always a great experience
Its okay
The best ice cream in Vancouver
If you like gelato and sorbetto this is one of the best in the city. I've been there so many timed I think I've tried almost every flavor. They even have a bin for cheap treats. When I pass through the door, the bin is my first stop. You can get cones. You can get treats to take home as well. Now stop thinking about it and reading this review and go there right now!
I always pass by there and I finally got to try.
Amazing! Service is great and lots of flavour to choose from.
I got the Gianduia flavour and it’s really good. My friends got the exotic sorbet (something like that) which has mango, passion fruit and papaya. So refreshing and sweet.
Thank you for reopening!!

This is my absolute favorite gelato shop!
Their gelato is so delicious that it’s even served as dessert on airplane meals. I’ve been enjoying their gelato for years, and to me, it’s the best in Vancouver—no, the best in all of Canada.
The only downside is that parking has become harder to find with each passing year. That’s the one thing I wish were easier.
Please keep delivering the same amazing flavors and service, always!
Great flavors. Good customer service, not great. Adequate seating arrangement. Some paid parking upfront and current construction occurring.
Not a great Gelato...
Many flavours to choose from. Would be going often.

I visited this place as it carries the name of my dad's town in Calabria. Was looking to say hello to the owners but unfortunately they weren't in. The gelato was very good. Will stop by again the next time I'm in town.
A huge variety of flavours to choose from! I was surprised how many there were, including a few sugar free options, and they have chocolate dipped sprinkle cones. The ice creams we tried were delicious.
They do not make many specialty coffees here, just some basic ones.
The atmosphere and decoration wasn’t great, it was a small space with only a few tiny uncomfortable tables in non ideal spots (too close to highly crowded areas) but we still enjoyed sitting outside on the sidewalk watching traffic.
Still, I would definitely go back.
Great selection and reasonable prices
This place is amazing, service is good, they have lots of flavors to choose from and different options of cones etc, love it
And also I like how the ice cream is not too sweet
Durian is good
