For the second time, this centre refuses to register me for the course because their placement test period has finished (and before the semester actually starts). This time I called one day later, only to interact with a rude attendant who refused to accept my official, recent TEF and AF results (with detailed description/breakdown of competences, with results converted to both CECR and NCLC and a TEF score) citing their “special system” for level placement. Without changing her tone, the unempathetic lady on the phone had the nerve to invite me to “come back in January”. According to their site, the online courses I was interested in were not sold out).
These days competence in French is an immigration issue for hundreds of people in precarious life situations. It’s funny (only bitterly so) how the francophone, who lobby so powerfully for the spread of their colonial language and culture (making it an immigration requirement), subsequently gatekeep access to essential education in French; a truly exclusionary practice.
After interacting with various francophone institutions across Vancouver (including AF), I’m seeing now that this is an unsettling pattern. I will be warning anyone I can against your institution.
Great place to learn and be a part of the community.
Always a pleasure to visit the Cultural Center thanks to their French-speaking activities. I highly recommend Fun Thursdays and the French Summer Festival!
A great place to spend time and enjoy french language and culture.
Very nice, clean and cozy place to study and read books with friendly staff :-)
excellent french restaurant. we enjoyed the food.
Excellent French conversation class with Nathalie, it's part of my life now, I love it. I like The Center, the team is great. The philosophy café is also very interesting. A big thank-you!
Great place to learn or practice your French! I just started an intermediate course there and so far it's great. The teacher is very knowledgable, they have a library where you can pick some books to take home, they also organize different activities so people can get together and practice. The staff is super nice and helpful. I recommend you check out this place if you're looking for a francophone community in Vancouver ?
The best place to learn French as a second language in Vancouver! Best teachers, convenient and flexible curriculum, in-person and online classes, all levels courses from the very beginner to upper intermediate. Lots of learning fun and really affordable prices!
Always a wonderful experience and fabulous meals. Almost like being in a little part of France
