Getting to experience omakase for the first time was an incredible treat. Watching Chef/owner Akiko work was fascinating, the counter was always very clean and empty and she would just magically make edible art appear before us! The staff were wonderful and it was fun learning from them and chatting with them about the food. This 2 hour event mixed classic Japanese expectations with novel fusion creations. Everything was delicious and changes with the seasons.
I’m glad I went back because the first time I dined at Cofu Chinatown was not great. They’re improving! First time: hardly any lights so no one could read their menu, wait staff seemed untrained and sadly came across as either looming or alternately; unwelcoming, they didn’t have any pressed sushi and weren’t going to make more, share plates not enough food to share. Second time months later: more lighting and I could read my menu, staff was experienced, had pressed...
My wife and I debated whether this was the best dinner we had ever had, or had had in a very long time. Either way COFU was worth every moment. The food was incredible, so flavourful and different. They had tons of options and not one thing disappointed. Our favourite was anything the braised ‘rib’ featured, and we really enjoyed a curated flight of sake too.
