As an alumnus who roamed these halls decades ago, I can confidently say the food today is leagues ahead of the culinary endurance tests we once endured.

Back in my day, a tray of something vaguely resembling food was considered a balanced meal. Now, students have entire buffet spreads with options, flavour, and, dare I say, edible ingredients.

Honestly, people are utterly spoiled these days; if they had to survive a single term on what we ate, they’d be petitioning the UN for humanitarian aid.

Honestly, eating at Gather is like having a bipolar girlfriend. Some days are great, with awesome options available, like mac' n' cheese, or brisket. Other days, horrendous, mushroom burgers and bland tofu. Staffing is equally inconsistent. Staff members like Alma, or Rey, are always incredible. Very personable people, kind, caring. Other staff members are frequently rude, talk back to you for no particular reason, or only very reluctantly accommodate dietary restrictions. One last note, can you please stop slamming the dishes on the glass counter? I know you are perfectly capable of handing it to me, my hand is right there.

The food quality went from 100 to 0 since last year. The servers are so rude as well.

There’s a station here at Gather called “Simply Local” that makes some outstanding dishes.

Unless you live in Place Vanier, it may seem inconvenient to come all the way to Gather for food, but when their best options are available it is 100% worth it.

One thing I noticed about the 3 UBC dining halls is that they try their best to be high quality, so when it took 5 minutes for my ordered poke bowl to be made I knew that it would be good. The fish tasted fresh and the bowl was stuffed with kimchi, edamame, and other goodies that I did not expect them to include.

Just because of this experience and the other high quality options Gather frequently has (including their solid shawarma and gyro wraps and vegan brownies) I seriously believe this could be the best first year dining hall on campus.

Place Vanier's Gathering Student Residence Dinning Hall is one of the three dining halls available on the UBC campus. It is the farthest dining hall compared to the other two. After entering the building, you will have to take a flight of stairs to get to the dining hall. The food available at Place Vanier comes from a variety of different cultures. Everyone will find something good to eat the dining hall. The dining hall can sit 200-300 people. It is a buffet style dining hall and you can get as much food you can eat. There is a salad bar and custom sandwich making station. There is a burgers, tacos, pork bun and pork belly ramen station. Food changes from time to time. It is best to check Nutrislice, the online menu app, to see what food the dining hall is serving before paying. The dining hall building has big windows overlooking the court yard of Place Vanier. You also have different kinds of seats like the Café style seats and also the long dining hall tables.During regular hours like mornings from 8-9am, lunch from 12-1pm, and dinner from 7-9pm, you will find lots of people there. You can avoid the traffic by avoiding these common times or arriving earlier to skip the potential line-up for food. The presentation of the dish is average. The portions are small. Food is placed on the counter which may get cold and unclean. Food quality tastes ok, but the servers are more concerned about getting as much food out to as many students and people as possible. During peak hours, the place becomes hectic. Food also is warm, not hot after peak times. Staff there are friendly and kind.Washrooms are downstairs, separate from the dining hall.

Food here is much better than the other two dining halls that UBC offers. Best place to go for sure if you want to get a meal at one of the dining halls. The food here although better, is still pretty bland and tasteless.

Only carbohydrates and fats, not much protein consistency. Desserts are good if you like sweets. Pic of cheese bagel attached!

I am a UBC Student with a meal plan, I eat here everyday a whole 3 meals a day. On multiple occasions myself and my friends have had chicken from Vanier, and it has been pink. The food is also usually bland, and never seasoned. The salmon has had brown horribly smelling juice spilling from it as well. I know it’s hard with a budget to be perfect, but this is absurd. I ate the butter chicken today, texture was off, but that’s usual, look at the chicken and it was extremely pink, now I am feeling unwell, I am hoping I do not have food poisoning, but most meals here are at risk of giving you that. Please eat with caution, and please do better Gather and Vanier.

I don't know why people give bad reviews, this place is amazing. Food is tasty, service is good, great choice of dishes, and for the quantity of food you can eat it's worth. I come here very often.
