I think some things can be improved but I don't think this place deserves the slander and comments it's received.

Pros: Bright, tall ceilings place, nice and quiet for working. If you need a place to have a quick stop and get some work done with solid wifi, this is your place. Staff are friendly and the washroom is clean!

Cons/Constructive Criticism: The coffee is certainly strong and a bit sour (I had a cappuccino with oat milk) - Trying different beans would help. The bathroom is clean but could definitely use some TLC in terms of decor and aesthetic

I LOVED this little spot. Great atmosphere and the staff here are incredibly lovely!! I got the croissant sandwich with scrambled eggs and the croissant was buttery, fluffy, and crispy. Soooo good! I also ordered the Ocha green tea and grabbed a drip coffee on my way out, all of it was so good. Prices are super reasonable too!! All round a great pick for main st coffee drinkers and people looking for a sweet spot to do some work or a light brunch!

This was one of the worst coffees I’ve had in Vancouver. It was truly so bitter and sour that it wasn’t drinkable. Also worth noting when you order the automatically charge you for the largest size so I paid seven dollars for a coffee that wasn’t even drinkable.

I've been coming to Gene for many years. Best espresso in the neighborhood. I gave 5 stars because the baristas are fantastic and always brighten my morning (especially during the pandemic). It really is a *coffee bar* not a restaurant, and for me, that's fine. Sure, I'd like to see the food quality improve slightly, but honestly, the coffee is so darn good, I just go to a nearby bakery afterwards if I'm hungry. If you're a serious coffee lover, this is where to go in Mt Pleasant. Such a unique location and historic building too, glad this piece of neighbourhood heritage has withstood the subway project.

Quite unhappy with my experience. I love matcha and was excited to see they offer a strawberry matcha. I got it and it was barely drinkable, tasted very off and nothing like any matcha I’ve had before. I told the barista who was very dismissive and she told me that there was nothing wrong with it. Was let down to spend $9 on a drink that tastes terrible.

This small cafe was a great spot to stop in for a quick coffee. I spend about 45 mins reading my book and enjoying my latte. The staff was super friendly, the latte was great, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Lots of places to sit inside or benches outside, not too noisy and it also seemed like it would be a great place to bring your laptop and work.
