I've dined here many times over the years, but this recent experience was so disappointing I won't be returning. The food was bad. Very bad. I don't know what's happened, but hopefully something in the kitchen changes soon for the better.
Hello: We had a very good experience. My Diva cocktail was delish. We had a window seat which was nice to look out over Gastown. Sashimi salad was excellent great dressing. Food came surprisingly quickly and was piping hot. We ordered the chicken Kara-age the chicken inside was super tender and outside crisp and hot. The octopus Takoyaki was great dipping sauce a delicous accompaniment. The Beef Udon (Guuu'd Yaki Udon) was good that dish could perhaps have had a stronger sauce it was quite mild tho the bonito flake gave it a great flavor. We would definately come here again!
We had a wonderful time at this restaurant! The food was incredible, the service was excellent, and the vibe was so romantic—highly recommend! The only thing that could be improved is the server's knowledge of the drink menu. We ordered the premium sake flight, but when we asked for details, the server simply Googled the names from the labels. From past experiences at Japanese izakayas, servers are usually well-versed in sake and enhance the experience by explaining the different types. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. That being said, the food was absolutely top-notch! We'd definitely come back.
Price is good. Deep fried is good. Fish is freshly grilled, but tasted like it's been in the fridge for quite a while.
Guu on Water Street is a charming spot with exceptional food. The menu offers an impressive variety of options - we sampled the bibimbap, wagyu beef, and salmon with rice, and each dish was thoroughly enjoyable. They also offer great drink specials, making it an even more appealing dining choice. The combination of cozy atmosphere, quality dishes, and drink offerings makes this place a wonderful find.

Chicken Karage was one of the best I've had in a long time. As well they served some delicious and large portions of sockeye sashimi as one of their specials.

This place came highly recommended. Saki flight was excellent. Some dishes were great others were disappointing. Overall experience was fine, just not the best. Probably would not come here again. Service was very good though.
Went there for lunch, enjoyed their beef bibimbap. The namban chicken was alright.

Perfect spot for both a date or a casual hangout with friends. The small bites are tasty, though the portions are a bit on the smaller side. Love the sake cocktails, and the negitoro with bread is a must-try! Great vibe overall for a casual night out.

Had yellowtail sashimi, agedashi tofu, takana & cod roe rice bowl, and karaage. Nothing in particular standing out but good food overall.

Food was decent. There was a pendent smell that was so bad that we left earlier that we otherwise would have likes… likely bad ventilation. In the past we haven’t had issues though.

Had lunch on Christmas day and the server was very kind and friendly. As soon as the place started filling up, service became extremely slow, but our server was still very nice. The food was alright, but it wasn’t great enough to make us want to come back. Overall, a place worth checking out once but not a spot I’d regularly visit.

I’ve been to Guu numerous times in the past and wanted to take my partner for his birthday as he’s never been there and loves Japanese food. I’ve always had a good experience in the past but I’m sad to say we had a terrible experience.
Our server seemed to not really know the menu when I tried to order. When we got our food, no one ever came back to ask how things tasted or if we needed anything else. Never had a water refill or ask if we’d like more drinks. No one came back once. We were obviously finished and just sitting there but I had to glad someone down to get our bill. I don’t think we will be back, unfortunately.

It's suitable for visiting with friends and eating Japanese food and the staff is very friendly, but the downside is that the portions are small and the prices are high.

Recommended dishes: Takoyaki
Visited with my boyfriend and two of his best friends. First, besides the karaage and the takoyaki (which you can't really mess up) the food was subpar, we ordered a couple appies to share while we drank. The tempura batter on the brussel sprouts was non-existent or falling off where there was. On the ebi mayo it was the opposite, there was an outrageous amount of batter on a small shrimp. Service was unbelievably slow for the amount of staff on deck. From ordering food/drinks to water service, to asking for the bill. Water cups were empty throughout the visit, and no one checked in to see if we wanted to order more food or drinks or if we were done to clear the table etc. We asked for the bill from one of the servers just to watch her forget and walk around looking for things to do. It took us three tries to get billed and by the time we were leaving the mood was down and we just wanted to leave.
