Everything we ordered was fantastic. I'll definitely be coming here more often. Small intimate and quaint. Maybe it's best to not tell everyone otherwise it'll be difficult to get a table.

Long standing neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Authentic recipes and flavours. Good lunch combos/bento options.

Really good, authentic Japanese cuisine. The service however was mediocre - servers were unattentive and difficult to flag down (we just wanted to order more food, refill tea, etc!). I would love to give these folks more business, but the poor service just made it a difficult experience for our guests of honour - we were a little embarrassed for bringing them here. I hope things improve one day, the chef knows his / her craft very well.

Love all the food they made, whatever it is sashimi, sushi, fried food or salad.

This place should have line ups out the door. It really is a hidden gem. Photo is the seafood tempura teishoku. One of the few places to be able to get teishoku in vancouver, this place is high on my list. Just reminds me of Japan, especially when all people eating here are all Japanese too. Lunch specials can be as cheap as $17. You can get that price these days elsewhere for a full set meal.

Cozy Japanese restaurant. Decent udon set. Sizeable karaage. High chair and children’s cutlery available. Free residential street parking.

One of the few times reviews were on par with my own preferences and perspective...a quiet, tastefully appointed (harkens back to mom and pop, neighborhood establishments back in the late 80s to early 90s), clean, but smaller restaurant, nestled in a quaint residential neighbourhood. The staff were friendly and sufficiently attentive.

The food offerings lean towards more mainstream; if one is looking for varieties that can be found in the specialized omakase restaurants, this is not a place for you.

Their bento box was packed with a great variety of side dishes. The karaage was gigantic! Crispy on the outside and juicy inside.

Dinning environment and restroom was clean and cozy. Easy to chat with each other and comfort food on the rainy day.

Cozy, small, and authentic japanese food! Our black cod fish set and ginger pork set were quite comforting and delicious. The black codfish was especially soft and well seasoned. Yum!!

I’ve been coming here for a while, and it used to be better. The food is still casual and decent, but sometimes it doesn’t feel as fresh, and overall it’s become pretty mediocre.

The issue recently has been the service and the food quality (compared to the past couple years). On our last visit around 5:30, a few tables were empty, but one server seemed upset there were customers. They even turned away two walk-ins because of reservations at 7 pm, which felt surprising for a casual restaurant. Another younger server was nice, but was told to turn us away too.

Between this experience and others we’ve had recently, we just don’t feel like coming back.

I don’t say this often in my reviews, maybe just a couple times throughout the entirety.

You must not miss this place.

Hachibei has been around for 30 years. I first heard about it 2 decades ago but never really found the chance to try it.

Today, i finally decided to try this place specifically by visiting it after a particularly tiring day. 1:30 pm and the place was still packed.

It was everything i imagined when my friend told me about it 20 years ago - ‘one of the last standing japanese warrior eateries!’ meaning it’s old school and authentic in her opinion.

Everything was great, no complaints.

Quality ingredients, masterful cooking techniques and the price is very reasonable.

Also it is a small place - around maybe 15-18 seats.

Japanese servers, chefs and even many of the eaters are japanese which truly is a testament to its authenticity. Japanese authenticity in restaurants is quite rare these days as many are run by chinese, vietnamese or koreans and the food is not authentic japanese but something of a fusion, westernized profile.

Many people who have lived in vancouver for decades probably have heard of hi genki, seto, washoku (downtown), l’ orangerie and a few other hole in the wall super authentic japanese places that have come and go throughout the decades. Some are still here (ie: hachibei, seto) but many have closed not because of lack of business but due to old age retirement.

If you want to try one of the longer remaining japanese places still standing, visit hachibei asap!!

Will return for sure.
